MikeR -- Unfortunately, the day may come when Vail connects all the way to Arrowhead. Just down 24 from Minturn a huge development is in the making. They are planning to build a ski area on Battle Mountain and take in the area that once was the Gilman Mine and now the Gilman ghost town. Something like 1700 "luxury homes" and a resort. The city fathers in Minturn are licking their chops over the cash that will bring in. Vail Daily last Sunday reported that they are already talking about what they are going to do with the money -- infrastructure, water supply, etc.

Lynx and elk don't have a chance to beat out that kind of money. The environment comes in a far second (if that) to a new sewer system for Minturn. Think what it will do for Red Cliff. Picture Burger King.

But just think of the upside if you're skiing from Vail Pass to Redcliff. Finally an alternative to Mexican food at the Reno Cafe at the end of the Shrine Pass trail.

there is no upside.......only our children and our childrens children will be left to deal with the consequences of living in a world with no wilderness because of developers and the rich who buy from them...well I suppose they can always go to a zoo to see animals....Thank Christ I'll be long gone by then

on the upside...another cloudless, windless, 45 degree bluebird day on the slopes this morning....but it is the offical start to spring break and by the time I got off the mountain at 1030....it looked like it was going to get ugly quick...God bless them all....enjoy

I needed to add a smiley to my 'upside' comment so the sarcasm is more obvious. There are just too many people competing for limited recreational and other resources. Wise resource management will help but it's not enough to ensure sustainable development. I love Colorado but the Front Range and Summit County is already overdeveloped and overcrowded and Eagle County is going the same route. There's probably enough of the Rockies left to satisfy the next few generations but then what?

then what???....I have no idea...ask the developers and the wealthy who are keeping the developers busy with their insatiable appetite for bigger, better, and more of it all....ask them whats next......but then again..I dont think we would probably want to hear their answer...LOL....

You shouldn't blame the developers for doing what they are programmed to do any more than you should blame the great white sharks for eating everything in sight. Here's the problem:

I dont blame the developers nearly as much as I blame the wealthy who are creating the demand...but the developers by the same token, can maybe have a little more of a conscious then they have and have a little more sympathy for future generations...but then again...maybe their vision....their view of shangrala is houses everywhere and no wilderness at all...maybe they truly believe that is better....but my money is on they are banking their millions and dont gaive a rats ass about what the implications are for tomorrow.....when I was a kid we were one of the first to commercial fish for TileFish..they are only caught in the canyons offshore of the middle Atlantic states..delicous fish..white flaky meat...sweet flavor.....and we knew how to catch them pretty well ...had it down to a science.....and we were getting beau coup money for them at the dock....people tried warning us to "slow down" and not fish so hard......to throw back the smaller ones....but from Monatuak to Norfolk, we were all fishing as hard as we could and making more money then we ever dreamed....10.000 pounds per trip and 2 to 3 bucks a pound...times that by 50 or so boats doing it....long story short....we fished it out.....caput...there is no longer a tile fish industry to speak of.....we killed it......there are lessons to be learned here...but no one is listening
