Outer Banks is beautiful..especially in Sept....very much like the outer Cape Cod before Cape Cod sold out and overdeveloped...very much like Long Beach Island/Beach Haven area too

September should be fine unless there is hurricane. Actually it rains less frequently as fall approaches so your chances for sunny weather are very good. But I don't think much of the area personally. I find that, except for a few federally controlled strips, it is disgustingly overbuilt--condos on stilts as far as the eye can see. I've lived in NC most of my life and I can't be bothered to go there. Some people swear by it, though (they can have it).

Well the drive is doable and we found a stilt hose in a town I never heard of north of hatteras on the beach. Our son is busting his hump to learn organic chemistry this summer and has a week off before heading from summer college to fall college. We thought he would like a break and this seemed like a nice beach. They offered hurricane ins.- I took it.
I haven't been to Long Beach Isl since 1973. --Atlantic city since 1969.
I wanted to try somewhere to read /walk the pupp and eat in or out.

Like most people say, unless there is a hurricane, OBX is great that time of year. Warm water, warm weather, few crowds after labor day.

I suggest heading north to areas like Duck or Corolla, very upscale, very underbuilt (despite what LauraB said).

I went to school in NC and spent 6 years down there. Before that, friends and I would go down every year for surf trips, but further down, towards Buxton and the little fishing villages. The 'in-town' area is disgustingly overbuilt, but those places are Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk.

For good information, try www.outerbanksexplorer.com

We use www.sunrealtync.com to find our rental every year since college and generally stay here for a week in june:

Great places to eat in corolla and duck, lots of upscale dining, quiet living and nice beaches.

If you wind up staying in the 'town' areas that I mention, before forming an opinion of OBX, make sure to drive north to Corolla and Duck, then make sure to cross the Oregon Inlet and see places south like Waves, Salvo, Rodanthe, Buxton....

I have been going, and will continue to go to the outer banks for years to come...so ask if you have any more questions.

Geoff

We went to OBX for the first time last year. We rented a house in Corolla--very northern point of OBX. We loved it--laid back, not too crowded, nice beaches.

Try this link for info on rentals, beaches, etc...

Thank you all for helping in the search. I think we'll stick with the place in Salvo and make day trips to various other spots.

Salvo is south of the Oregon Inlet in the more rustic portion of OBX. It's slightly north of Buxton (where the lighthouse is). You're not going to find a lot of nice places to eat and will wind up driving up to Nags Head for dinner (quite a trek especially at night through the dunes with no lights). Most of the people you find south of the inlet will be either A) hardcore surfers (I probably fit into that category) and B) hardcore fishermen.

Not to mention, that area is the very first place to be evacuated during hurricanes etc.

You could drive south on highway 12 and take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island.. small, quiet. The official town bird is the Mosquito..I thought that was funny until I camped there one night, we packed up and left the next morning with hardly any blood remaining in our bodies.

Anyway, I consider the Outer Banks to be my second home. Like I said I spent about 6 years in eastern carolina followed by many trips before and after that time span. This year was the first year in about 5 that we did not make our annual trip because we are saving for our wedding.

I know most areas very well, north and south, so feel free to ask questions.

I tried all the realty posts that were given. I guess everyone goe it in gear after the 4th because all the reasonable housing is taken our week. I guess we'll stick to what we reserved in Salvo.
More questions to follow as we get closer.. thanks to all who replied

If you're looking for a good beach with fewer crowds, try Topsail Island or Emerald Isle. Both are extensions of the NC outer banks but farther south near Wilmington. They face southeast, which results in gentler waves and gradual slopes, in contrast to the northern OBX (Okracoke, Hatteras, etc.) which have rough surf and strong undertow. Topsail is well developed, but a laid back atmosphere especially at the southern end of the island. Emerald is less developed and more upscale, though it has few restaurants. If you want he very best and don't mind going farther south, try Sullivan's Island (mostly residential) or Kiawah Island (resort development)near Charleston, SC. Fantastic east coast beaches and great "low country" cooking.

I have been going to the OBX for more than 20 years - we live less than two hours away. I own a cottage in Duck (northern beach) and have been down several times this summer. My college aged daughter is living there this summer and working in a shop. Tough life.

Anyway, I have lots of information on the OBX so feel free to e-mail or message me with specific questions.

Bob

Bob or anyone else familiar with OBX:
We are going down to Duck the last week of August with our three daughters and their families. We have 8 grandchildren and will definitely need to get away for dinner a few times during the week. We are looking for a nice seafood place with views of the water in the Duck area and nearby. Can you please suggest a few places for us to try. And will we need reservations, if they even take them.
Also, the last time we went was a bit confusing when we went thru Norfolk and we almost missed the "new road" that cuts off some time. We are flying the year into Norfolk. Can you advise directions or a website that gives the quickest way to get there from the Norfolk area? Many thanks.
