Our friend JimD of Premium IV has just informed us that the SBH airport has been closed due to high winds(it must now be, in fact, blowing like stink). The weather reports I've seen, for what their worth, don't indicate much change in wind velocity for the next day or so; therefore, I recommend to those headed our way in the next few days to have their plans B and C researched before arriving at SXM. Let's hope that the winds subside to honkin' or below quickly so as not to disrupt carefully planned travel arrangements.
Hopefully JimD will continue to keep us informed as to SBH airport status.

Indeed, this is exactly what we said in another thread. You can have a Honking Wind that may, or may not, close the airport (it's fifty/fifty with a Honker). But with Blowing Like Stink, the airport is closed.
Alas, it appears we either have a sustained Honking Wind or else Blowing Like Stink.
It's looking like the SS St Barf.

Okay, let's come up with a list for Soon-to-be Travellers.
1. La Samanna: French side, very nice, very expensive. Plus a big cab ride.
2. Caravanserai: Right by the airport. Clean, attractive enough and features the Sunset Bar where Topless Ladies Always Drink Free.
3. Horny Toad: No experience.
4. Mary Boon: No experience.
5. Divi Beach: "Uneven" service according to a buddy but an attractive property.
Everyone offer up thoughts for our SXM-bound friends as it looks like we may have some overnighters.

Having had the great good fortune to have only ridden the Voyager one time in calm seas in these many years of travels, I can only imagine what that experience would be like in today's seas. What about the Rapid Explorer? How does it fare in rough waters? Of course one's experience can be expected to vary depending on whether one is an experienced semen or out in the open warm waters for the first time.

I know the drill- never take a ferry in the South Pacific in the afternoon. No clouds but the captain sitting on the fly bridge has on a slicker- why I ask? Because of the wind which will make the waves wash over the boat and most will get sick over the next hour. No fun for them or the crew who handed out plastic buckets.

The big mombo catamaran will cut through some of the chop, n'est pas? Would it not be a better ride? At least it would be shorter...

Royal Turtle - nice and close to the airport; Mary's Boon- on the beach with a restaurant- recommended.

Okay, here is a piece of advice to any who want to listen:
If/when the airport at SBH opens, it will be an hour to hour and day by day thing. A lot of people may be clammmering for what flights they can get off before the winds close the airport again.
If you have three or four (or more) in your group and are holding Winair or SBH Communter tickets, call them now and see if you can change that to a charter.
Why?
Because. If they have 100 people trying to get over in a day and the weather is good, Winair can get them over without problem. But if they only have a small window where they can squeeze a few flights through, and they wont know anymore than you will until they get a call that SBH is open, then they will probably show some preference for a charter crowd.
Anyone travelling with four or more in the party needs to upgrade to a charter.

Newbies: Listen to Andy who has been going to SXM for over thirty years. Write names and numbers down so that you can make Fast Arrangements if you get to the gate and see a bunch of weary confused looking americans clammering for options.

Here is the link for the hotels near the airport. A lot of them have nice websites for more info. Look at Simpson Bay/Cole Bay. http://www.sxm-hotels.com/dutch_hotels.html
