Hello all SBH experts! It has been a few years since my last trip to the Bart, and I need some help. Last time we stayed in St jean and it was October. The mosquitos nearly made eveings impossible to enjoy. This year returning same time of year (anniversary)I am looking at two possibilities to help this years experience. The first choice is Grand cul de sac. Rose de vents. The second would be Gustavia. Villa Rosali Please let me know what option you think would be the best for us, and if you have any information on the villas. I hear that grand cul has breezy eveings, and thought this may eliminate the problem, as well being close to La ti and hotel Christopher. Thanks for you help!!!! :)

The breezes or lack thereof, and rain probably affected you before in St.Jean...just no way to predict the situation. However, my thoughts would be to:
1-stay at a higher elevation, where you can capture the AM southern breezes, then daytime eastern breezes and finally the afternoon/evening easterly/northerly breezes. This could be done at various locations, but a higher elevation in Vitet, or on the southern or eastern side of SB works best, provided not too much vegetation around the villa.
2-once you decide on a villa, and if in fact the breezes are less and it has rained a lot, prearrange with the owner/rental company to spray the gardens for mosquitos if this is in fact a problem. Most owners don't mind this any way.
3-mosquito coils you can purchase at the grocer or hardware help in non breezy areas like the kitchen, and spraying in the evening & again early morning with Baygon helps too. One of the best deterents around sitting areas, kitchen, etc. which are open aire is a simple floor fan to keep them from flyig low on the floors
Lush, thick foilage, rain & lack of breeze encourage them greatly. So, its difficult to predict what will happen, but hedging is good. Also, some people are simply more attracted by them. Oils, perfume, hair products, etc. all tend to attract them. A known deterent used by many people around the world includes a diet consisting of 2-3 tablespoons of fresh garlic daily, mixed with your meals.

Also, There is a big salt pond in St.Jean, and your villa could have been near it.Salt ponds also at Saline Grand cul de Sac, Petit cul de Sac and Toiny.Get some mosquito swarms near the salt ponds,or any standing waterGustavia has some good breezes if you are facing the ocean, and so does Colombier or any place high in the hills. If it's been rainy you'll get mosquitos anywhere so have the rental agency call Dead Mpustique to fumigate and keep your bedroom and bath doors and windows closed in the villa. They can be very pesky in the bathroom once they get in.

Thanks for your advice! I thought that grand cul might be safe since it advertises a "healthy breeze". Will keep looking. :-)

Good thoughts. Certain areas are more "immune" than other areas to skeeters. Think "winds" here. As such, Pointe Milou and the high hills of Colombier, if any breeze is blowing, are not favored sites for skeeters.
So, once you have plenty of wind, not too much garden, no major standing water nearby, then just make sure you dont have construction going on in the neighborhood - or that you at least have lotsa chickens in the hood - to avoid the dreaded scallapod.

We were on St.Jean beach in December, very near ER construction.Lots of chickens around our cottage, something we've never seen on St.Jean beach before, but we enjoyed their company and assumed they were introduced to keep the scalopoids at a minimum.Few mosquitos as well and good breezes.

Probably so. Once you start tearing up stuff, you unleash the hidden scalapods. Anyone doing construction who scatters a bunch of chickens around is either very wise or has been stung by Les Scallapods before.

A local owns some very large beachfront lots and at least 3 cottages next to Nikki Beach.Needless to say, the owners of the ER would love to buy it all, and gentrify the neighborhood. The local gentleman will not sell to Matthews, and I hope he doesn't.I hope the chickens are still entertaining the Matthews when we return in February.

A little off topic, but...
Is anyone else getting invaded by ladybugs and stink bugs in your regions? We have more than I have ever noticed this year - both at work and at home.
