The nice thing is that we are becoming the first generation of Old Farts With Cool Music.
I always paid lip service to tolerating the Swing and Big Band stuff that my parents fancied when they were trying to influence my budding musical taste. And on the rare occasion that I had to wear a monkey suit for a formal ball, being able to say "Listen honey, this was a big hit for Glen Miller" almost had some Style Points (almost).
But, let's face it: As a kid, I just wasn't into "Winchester Cathedral" or "Chatanooga Choo Choo".
My kids have it good. I will be rocking out to some of my Old Fuddyduddy tunes and they will run into the room and ask me what it is. They cut their teeth on Def Leppard, they think Bon Jovi is Da Bomb, they love Kiss. When I start playing all my Old Fuddyduddy stuff, they usually have the same response: Can I have that on my IPod?
Mairsy dotes and dosey dotes And little lambsidivies.
Sorry mom. Aint happenin.

Mike- Good call on Kirsty MacColl. My favorite album is "Desperate Character" but, there are a few good greatest hits CD's worth owning. Her unfortunate, and tragic, death, a few years ago, was a big loss to the music world. Phil- Good choices. You might want to add some New York Dolls and English Beat...

Her father, Ewan MacColl, wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (a hit for Roberta Flack).

On a i(sle) Tunes side note: The AppleStore has some really good refurbished iPod deals. Just got an original iPod, 40GB (10,000 songs) with Dock for my son's birthday for $249.00. They have others, just click on the Red Tag.

Oh god, so St Barths is like Madeira - for the "newly weds and nearly deads"...
As much as I enjoyed seeing Metallica on your list IV, I have to make you disappointed.

No. We don't have Cool Music. My 14 year old daughter classifies Metallica as Old Farts Rock. She winces her eyes out at Green Day. Not to mention the Stones, Clash, Bon Jovi... (Hint: try Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom if you want to impress/scare the kids. Nothing scare the rebellious kid more than mom rocking to the same tune...)
Anyway, my kid wasn't on the Island trip, and she didn't have a say in what I brought for my three weeks in paradise. Since I don't have an ipod, I don't have 7000 tracks. Since I spent all my money on the trip my mp3-player only have 128 mb. Enough to get through on the air, on the bus, the airport etc but not much more. Brought a slip with 20 CD's. Since my travel companion have a taste in music very far from my own, I tried to diverse, and chose wisely. I think. I don't expect you to agree ;)
- Metallica Mix - Wherever I May Roam, The Unnamed Feeling, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Fuel, Turn The Page, Whiskey In The Jar, St Anger, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Until It Sleeps, Die, Die My Darling, Don't Tread On Me, Sad But True, The Unforgiven
- Heavy Mix - Hallowed Be Thy Name (live), I Am The Sword, Hammerfall, The Hand That Feeds, Biggest & The Best, Disposable Teens, St Anger, Revolution, Fireball, Keep The Faith, Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City (live), Tainted Love, Until It Sleeps, Fear Of The Dark, Black Sabbath, Enter Sandman
- Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Hooked On Best Of Classics
- Angelique Kidjo - Black Ivory Soul
- Tanya Stephens - Sintoxicated
- Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill
- Sheryl Crow - Shery Crow
- Sheryl Crow - Wildflower
- Judas Priest - Simply The Best
- Ebba Grön - Samlingen (swedish punk from late 70's early 80's)
- Phil Collins - Serious Hits... Live!
- U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990
- Eros Ramazotti - Dove c'é musica
- Christy O'Leary - Song's Sweet Caress (irish folk)
- Quilty - I'm Here Because I'm Here (irish folk)
- Mari Boine - Eagle Brother (norwegian sami, inspired by south american folk)
- Mari Boine - Eight Seasons (norwegian sami)
- AC/DC - Live
- Deep Purple - Bananas
- Dio - Diamonds The Best Of Dio
We actually listened to every track, the old U2 and the new Crow was the best background for talking, eating. The Metallica and Heavy Mix for drinks. Ebba Grön for the jacuzzi. Nothing like a stroll down memory lane, and a little left wing idealism when you sip on the ti'punch, sizzle your hiney, gaze at the stars in the balmy caribbean night...
Oh yes, I may be a woman and have not yet reached 40, but I am indeed an Old Fart ;) /K

Karibien: We are the first generation to listen to the same TYPE of music as the our kids. Some of the groups may be different but the genres are pretty established. With the exception of Shocktrash which is incomprehensible and exists just to irritate parents and lead kids to anarchy, there really aren't many new genres this generation.
In fact, a SURPRISINGLY large percentage of New Music sounds like Hoarse Coffee House Folky Wannabees that most of us fell asleep listening to Back In The Day.
