Isle Tunes
      #50952 - 01/12/06 06:58 AM

I was driving to work this morning on this very grey, yet mild January day and listening to a new CD I got called Amor, Amor by Arielle Dombasle, a French chanteuse we discovered while enjoying my birthday lunch at Lafayette last month. It seemed to be the perfect mix for that moment. I smiled the whole way to work. What a great way to start my day.

Like most, we take a stack of CDs with us to SBH, plus now the iPod.

What are your top ten "isle tunes" (or CDs) when you're on SBH?

Good subject- I am a jazz lover but like some of the newer people- Michael Buble, Jane Monheit. Also some older ones- Andre Previn when he played jazz, David Benoit, Elaine Elias, Lee Ritenauer, George Shearing, Marilyn Scott, Gene Harris Trio, Joe McBride,Jeff Linsky, Peter White.
We normally bring 20 CDs and of course my MP3 is loaded.

I am even now, WITH GREAT HELP FROM BOB IN VA, MIKER, JEK AND MANY OTHERS HERE, putting together collections with Moby, Thievery Corp, Zero 7 and the like. Throw in a bit of Sade and french Ah Ah Ah music (electronic music where the only lyric is a french woman going Ah Ah Ah in the echo chamber every minute or so) and you are set.

Well, since I listen to the lounge music all day and night, when I get to SBH, we go from Porno for Pyros and Jane's Addiction to the Cure, maybe some Sting if we are feeling mellow, a little Pantera and Slayer, some '80's metal (Ratt, Iron Maiden etc), Blind Mellon, Zeppelin and this year I will bring down some Hawthorn Heights, some Killers, maybe The Bravery and She Wants Revenge.

Don't forget your REM, Gin Blossoms, U2, and Marley... mellow out with some Nora Jones, Sarah MacLaughlin, or Maroon 5...

ah yes, forgot Van the Man and Jack Johnson.

Marvin Gaye is good for one thing, but no Barry (White, not Mannilow)? Gotta have some Barry. That's as good as a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door if someone hears Barry being played

Our official "isle tunes" however, discounting whole mixes....are "Back to the Island" by Leon Russell and "Island Fever " by JB and from the musical "Dont Stop the Carnival" ( which was a great theatrical play as well)

Wendi had the line "And watch the Sun Go down, and hear the sea roll in" from "Back to the Island" engraved in my ipod...a tribute to our stays at Auberge

Here's what we've been bringing for many ,many years.I generally bring around 40 CD's, (and they've been played at many "soireés")
Jimmy -any and all(espacially "Ballads" from The '96 Box Set)
Marley -any and all
"The Harder They Come"-Always play it as we unpack- it doesn't get any better
Leonard Cohen-anything.
and Jennifer Warnes
Dylan -"Highway 61" and on and on
Willie -"Stardust" and on and on
Django Reinhart-(and Stephane Grapelli)....anything
Charles Aznevour (many bought at "Backstage Music")
Edith Piaf
Patsy Cline
Dinah Washington
Louis Armstrong
Hank Williams
Billie and Ella
Jerry Jeff-"Bathin' Suits and Cowboy Boots"-one of the best Caribbean albums ever
"Pet Sounds"
and of course -Charles Darden's CD, the 2 by Alerte 2B , Alain Landry, and the "Iguane" mixes
Music has always been a big part of our life in SBH

No, that's a good thing. My 60 yr old father wouldn't know anyone other than Simon & Garfunkel. And I can guaruntee that he wouldn't have a clue how to work an iPod. I bought him his first computer last year -- he's still stumped.

So you and Al Gore must have invented the internet together.

I got my first "IBM Clone" in '85. No hard drive, dual 5.25 floppies to boot up. In '72 -- what did they have, punch cards and tapes?
