If we start calling our childrens music "crap"...we have then officially become our parents....I for one dont want that....they do listen to some good stuff and some not so good stuff...just like we did.....besides, good and bad in music is very subjective anyway.....give it a listen with an open ear and mind...you'll be surprised...and it will be more then our parents did for us...which is a good thing

I don't think my kid would agree... she think there's a world of difference between the roaring hoarse Lemmy of Motorhead and the incomprehensible lead singer of Arch Enemy. Without much success I have tried to let my knowledge, wisdom and conclusion down to the next generation, as to let them know the wheel has been invented, already. Explaining the devolopment of thrash metal (and not trash) leading from Judas Priest and Motorhead through Metallica towards Arch Enemy... Nope. No connection. "It's NOT the same thing!"

New genres may be few, but similarities may be ignored and diffrences enhanced by those so enclined.

incomprehensible and exists just to irritate parents and lead kids to anarchy

And there you have it. Every generation needs to have its own music, symbols and ideals. We will always be Old Farts. That is Our Job as parents.

Miker: It is one thing to label something you dont know. Our parents had never heard anything like the Stones or the Beatles and immediately pulled The Crap Handle.

But when a band comes out today with a bass, a guitar, a drum kit and a singer, they usually aren't in uncharted territory for Old Farts like us.

Some of what is going on today is pretty good, like always. Some of it is crap, like always. A fellow listening to his Frankie Sinatra records or his Tommy Dorsey albums probably did not have the ear or experience to judge Led Zeppelin. But those of us, which is all of us, who have gone through 40 years of various "genres" of Guitar-based rock have enough experience to cast some judgements.

I am not concerned about lyric because I expect kids today to be singing about their issues, not mine. But I know when a guy can play guitar and when he cant. My dad thought Eddie Van Halen was just making noise when in actual fact the boy could play. My dad just had no experience to realize this.

Everyone tries to tell us not to be judgemental as though engaging our brains and stating our opinions is The Great Sin today. Horsehockey. Grog of Og couldn't tell a sabre tooth from a glyptodont. But Erg from Gerg could. We are, believe it or not, descendants of Erg, the Grogs having died out on the sharp bloody savannahs of Africa long ago.

Like what you like, know what you know, and dont apologize for it.

Talent is always talent. And, unless there has been some unusual alchemy, crap is always crap.

For those who've mentioned reggae as a genre that they dabble in...I have to suggest Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA).
It's new roots reggae. Peace in a Time of War is one of my all time favorites and I listen to a LOT of reggae.

I'd like to add Toots and the Maytals and Desmond Dekker to artists already listed. I'll also second MikeR on Black Uhuru (or anything where Sly & Robbie are on bass and drums)

Karibiean: Sharp reading there. The "h" in "thrash" was intentionally left out.

Lookit, here is your guitar lesson everyone:

You can play standard chords without distortion. Sounds very John Denver-esque. You can play power chords with distortion in standard patterns with a throbbing bass - hey that's metal man. You can play somewhat freehanded always working off arpeggios, scales, modes or something tied to a chord structure a la Van Halen. You can play riffs and licks a la Keith Richards.

And nowadays, you can just vamp one overdistorted power chord or even one string (run through electronics to fatten it) at a high rate of speed and call yourself Thrash.

In every genre, there is the good and the bad. I like SOME Thrash. I like SOME Rap, even Gangsta. But just because Fifty can bring it does not mean that Porkchop can.

MikeR, I don't think my kids music is crap. I actually like a lot of it. I love her dearly and also show my appriciation of her taste. Sometimes. But I also see her need to keep a private sphere, to make up her own mind, to take a stand, to not conform with the rest of her class - or me. I do keep an open mind, and try to teach my kid to keep hers open too. As a matter in fact, in the next few weeks we are going to concerts together. First an "old fart-band" and then a "new generation-band". That will be fun ;)

Take her to the Stones. They'll be eighty.

And still touring.

SOJA is a local DC area band. They're very good and put on a nice show.

Yes Eddie, I saw them while on the outer banks and now can't get a enough. They released a new cd on jan 6th but I can't get my hands on it yet since it's not in any stores brick and mortar OR online yet. Just at their shows.

I also liked your Gregory Isaacs call earlier in the thread..I was going to suggest that as well

Also noticed your English Beat suggestion...nice

I am teaching my kids to appreciate music, even if they don't necessarily like it. They now can identify Led Zep, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Green Day, Metallica, Jet and others by the guitar, the singer, and/or their distinctive sound -- to distinguish and appreciate their unique style and musicianship. They also are exposed to the Blues, Jazz, Classical, and the Classics (Sinatra, Elvis, Beatles).

Sure they listen to Pop/Bubble Gum/Disposable music, but when someone like Joss Stone comes on, it's gratifying to see them stop, listen, and appreciate the talent, regardless of whether or not the "like" the song.

Certainly, this is far more than what my folks did for me.

An open mind does not preclude discernment. I was never a big fan of grunge. It just doesn't do it for me. But I do tip my hat to Nirvana. Not my scene, man. But those boys were the best and I recognize the talent.

You can recognize talent without liking something. And you can like something without recognizing talent (which sometimes is not even there). I may not like a song or a group or a genre but I will always tip my hat to the kids who can bring it and have talent.

However, in trying to keep an "open mind" I dont turn my brain off. I think there is a lot of emperor without clothes when it comes to talking about rock. Just because everyone says someone is good does not mean they really are talented.

Lookit folks, I have liked many bands that had very little talent if the truth be told. But they could string together a few catchy chords and a lyric that caught my attention. Just because I like it does not mean it is good. Just because I dont like it does not mean it is bad.

Miker may not like the Duke Blue Devils. But he knows talent when he sees it.
