I will be in Rome on business in October and my husband will be joining me at the end - we've been to Italy three times so we've seen the major sites (some several times) so we are debating about "doing" the Italian Riveria or the Amalfi Coast - anyone out there done either? Have any advice - considering the time of year, etc.?

I've done both and I agree with Mike. Capri is stunningly beautiful and the Amalfi Coast has great charm. Though I do like the town of Camogli on the Italian Riveria and there is a great hike on the coastline there, the Amalfi Coast (Ravelo and amalfi) is spectacular.

For sure- Positano and Capri are first class- do the Amalfi.

Yes, they are right- if you only have a few days- go to Sorrento, Positano and Capri. And you should stay over night in Capri, as it is very crowded during the day. The real charm only can be seen in the evning. Sitting on "La Piazetta" with a glas of prosecco. And during the day- go to one of the nice beach clubs.

Has Italy enacted their threatened law (that no one exactly understands) where a woman on a beach can sort of be topless but if she gets up or walks around, she has to put her top back on?
I saw that written up somewhere and thought it rather bizarre.

No more strange than Brazil- in Rio the girls from Ipanema can wear hardly anything on the beach but once they leave they have to cover up. AND they do enforce that law.

Well, putting on a top if walking around is quite common in Europe:) Usually no one minds being topless while lying on the beach, but walking around is not much appreciated at many places. I can not imagine a law about this though.

I wasn't talking topless- even a regular bathing suit has to be covered up once they leave the beach.

I never had any problems with being topless at any Italian beach - and I`m never wearing a top when I´m at the beach.I don´t know if there really exists such a funny law as it is assumed (I don´t believe it, I think this was a special newspaper duck from summer 2003 - it would be too long to explain this duck here). But if the Berlusconi government has really introduced such a law meanwhile, nobody in Italy takes care of it. I was never the only topless woman at an Italian beach equal where and when I was. It was always quite normal not only to lay down and sunbathe topless but also to walk around topless, to swim topless and even at some beaches to sit topless in the beach bars. Only when your thong bottom is bothering you too much it seems to me that it´s perhaps better to visit a special nude beach. And the boys became a little bit boring during the last years.

Daytime Capri is like St. Maarten, Evening Capri is even better than St. Barth (relatively ;-).
Quisisana's terrace with drinks is a must. Just talk with friends, have a drink or four, and watch the people. Stop there before and after dinner.
http://www.aprea.it/ runs a small boat service that's pretty good for going around the island, for picnic, or even for a visit to the Amalfi coast. Nothing is better than going around the island slowly on a small boat and stopping here and there. Giovanni can also give advice on restaurants, he knows a lot of people. Nice stories about the island. He was quite true about a few popular restaurants not being worth the money.
We stayed at Hotel Luna (nothing else was available), pretty good choice for the price. Excellent location, nice view and just next to the Quisi.
In the restaurants don't look the menu but ask what's fresh or special for today. Don't order separately but to share with others.
Blue grotto is overrated. If you are somewhere with a lot of daytrip tourists, you are in the wrong place.
Shopping is better in Capri than St. Barth but the prices are standard €uropean pricing, no tax advantage.

I agree with everthing but the Blue Grotto...I thought that was pretty cool

When you sail around the island with plenty of time, there are a number of other grottos and similar cool places to visit and swim.

sounds good to me...hopefully I will someday get the chance to return and get to stay more then the 2 days I was there
