I am considering buying my husband ski boots for Christmas this year. I've been skiing in my own boots for ever and ever b/c I have wierd feet (and b/c I'm a wimp and have to have heaters for my toes), but my current pair is a few years old.
I'm looking for a good pair of recreational boots that will last a number of years. We usually ski 5-10 days a year and can handle 'advanced' terrain but we tend to stick to easy crusing and a few bumps/steeps thrown in to prove we can still do it. He does not need professional quality boots, but I don't want bottom of the line either ... just nice quality boots for a recreational skier.
Can anyone (MikeR) give me a general price point on such an item. We will probably buy during our trip to Vail in January at RightFit or SureFit or whatever that place is called now. I'm sure there are cheaper places to get boots (and cheaper times of year to buy), but since we are purely recreational skiers with not much equipment knowledge I'd like a professional boot fitter (not some college kid taking a semester off and working in a ski shop to buy lift tickets who really does not know much about the prodcut they are selling) to fit him since he will probably wear these boots for MANY years.
Merci.

figure on spending about 500 bucks....and you are absolutely right...a proper professional boot fit is essential to anyones confort and safety whether they ski 5 days a year like yourselves or 100 days a year like myself...it doesn't matter...and dont go buying the "flavor of the month" in terms of brand names....each brand tends to have a bias towards certain feet types....go with whatever brand is comfortable and gives you a good fit....try at least 3 or 4 brands... for instance Langes are great boots but there is no way I can get my feet comfortable in them......and if you can..go for the custom insert, or at the very least a custom footbed...they make a world of difference in both performance and comfort.......doing this in Vail in high season eh???...ouch.....get ready for a full price hosing...I know some great boot footers in Breck if you want to come that way and check em out..I can set you up with them.....but there are also some good boot fitters in vail as well...any other questions, just PM me

Thanks for the price point and the info. Yup, Vail in high season is not the most wallet friendly, but we got a great deal on the Lodge at Vail which includes room, b-fast and lift tickets. We usually end up deciding between Vail or Keystone and with this deal it was a very small difference between Silvermill and the Lodge.
I doubt we will make it over your way since we only have 5 days to ski (and most likely no car), but thanks for the Breck offer ... chances are we will ski Keystone next year so if hubby does not get boots this Christmas I'll take you up on the recommendations then.
Enjoy the Turkey day snow ... and save some for us poor souls who don't get there until January!

good choice not to go to Keystone..they currently have "issues"...these issues have caused every retail store in the village to pull out ( us included)...currently they offer a crappy jewelry store, a t shirt shop or ten...and a bunch of restaurants....most of which arent very good becasue the good ones left

Wow ... good to know. Do you think the 'issues' are resolveable? I sure hope so ... my family has skied Keystone for many years and have always loved the skiing, but it was certainly nice when the Village went in and Keystone had a little more to 'do'. Are the 'issues' affecting the mountain/skiing or only the base area?

dont know if the issues are resolvable or not.....we wont ever put a shop there again.....our next location will be in Breck, next season perhaps...they have had 4 different retail property managers in 4 years.....they are brutal on retail tennants and despite many promises, they dont get the foot traffic in there in the summer which makes it tough to stay solvent...the whole idea of the village was great in theory but there are some pretty dumbass short sighted people in charge over there.....the mountain isnt effected by it at all..its still a good mountain to ski..especially in the Outback.......I dont personally care for Vail...its too foo foo for me.....but Vails terrain, especially the back bowls, are pretty awesome to ski never the less.....and there certainly isnt any lack of things to do
