Are you planning to stay in Guadeloupe? Any recommendations there? We hope to start our journey before the christmas and Guadeloupe has been one of the possibilities for a new place to visit.
Petri
I will be travelling with a co-worker, and we'll begin our journey with two weeks on Guadeloupe for a language course (french). We will arrive on Friday night November 4th, have the weekend to ourselves, and then the course starts Monday morning. Some kind of excursion for the weekend in the middle I think. Saturday morning Nov 19th we leave for SBH and one week vacation (staying in Case a FoFo).
On Guadeloupe we'll be staying in St Anne, that's on the south coast not far from St Francois. That happens to be where the school is, and it looks nice. The long beach just around the corner ;) wich has it's advantages as we won't have a car here. St Anne on Antilles info tourisme The school
On the first weekend, and later when we get afternoons and evenings off we plan on hopping on buses and explore the island budget style. If possible I want to go to Marie Galante, and visit some of the rhum destilleries there. I must find out their opening hours, on weekends? and how to get around on Marie Galante? We also have Armistice day off, maybe we will rent a car and visit Basse-Terre and the vulcano, hiking to one or more of the waterfalls?
The plan is simple - go with the flow... Somehow somewhere I will visit a destillery, maybe Damoiseau in Le Moule... Hours will be spent reading french verbs on the beach... If we feel up to it and the weather is right we will hike... If the weather suck we spend evenings sucking on a rum punch...
Our main objectives are to learn some french, listen to french, get by in a frenchspeaking environment - and to wind down, stop looking at the watch, to relax...
And hopefully stay out of tropical storms...
/K

We used Mr. Desiree Telbois, owner of Tel Location, for the weeks rental. tel-location@wanadoo.fr 0590 97 15 91, 0590 97 35 55@ port, and 0690 71 44 96 mobile, 0590 97 56 54 fax. He has an 'office' at the ferry pier :-) Try to go over on the Friday night ferry or first thing Saturday. Hit the distilleries between 9-12 as they will close later in the day (maybe). We hit Distillerie Bellevue and Bielle but missed Poisson.
I don't know if they will open the apartment for just the weekend but check with Soleil Levant. They have a couple types of accomodations. We stayed in the marine apartments which were very nice. All three places are in Capesterre. Soleil Levant Advantage is being able to walk to dinner and to the beautiful Anse Feuillere.
A nice lunch on the beach at Plaisirs du Marin (just north of Saint Louis) followed by a kayak trip on the Viex Fort river would fill several hours on Saturday.
Good beaches are Moustique and for more adventure..Anse Feuillard area.(counter clockwise coming out of Capesterre before Le Gouffre...part road, part hiking in. If you stay over in Capesterre, we really enjoyed Le Reflet de I'ile right in town. Harold and his wife Roland are wonderful hosts. If he has local beef stew for a special be sure to try it.
MAKE SURE you go to see Gueule Grand Gouffre in the north part of the island. Very dramatic cliffs ..will wow you!
Florence speaks English and can help you will all issues concerning the island. Her email is A.Marie-Galante@wanadoo.fr .
The buses do not run on Sundays so make *note*.
Marie-Galante is a very special place to me...I hope you will enjoy your visit. It is easy to navigate the island so don't be concerned at all about driving.
Have a great trip to Guadeloupe, the off shore islands, and especially Saint Barthelemy.
Best regards, Erma
