San Francisco

If anyone can help me, please do.

We'll be in San Francisco this weekend and would like any recommendations on a nice, quaint Sicilian/Italian restaurant in the downtown area. We are staying close to Union Square and Nob Hill. Any thoughts are genuinely appreciated!

Just found out this AM my old favorite closed last year.

Thanks.

Ric

Here are two that may fit the bill, but not necessarily near where you are staying...

A16, in the Marina District:

Incanto, in the Noe Valley:

Hi Ric,
My favorite Italian in SF is the lovely neighborhood spot Venticello in Nob Hill
1257 Taylor St.(Washington St.) 415-922-2545. It has a wood burning oven, no tourists and is a real find. Tuscan cuisine.

I also like Rose Pistola in North Beach 532 Columbus Ave.(bet. Green & Union Sts.) 415-399-0499, but haven't been for awhile. More contemporary Italian. Big, noisy room as compared with intimate, warm Venticello.

Gayle, what a coincidence! We found Venticello through a friend and had dinner there Friday night. Visited Agua as well for some wine. Both excellent. It was a whirlwind trip primarily to a family members Memorial Service in Tiburon, but we took time to enjoy a few things:

1 day in San Francisco, 1/2 in Sausilito/Tiburon and a split day between Sonoma and Napa with the highlight there being Stags Leap and a couple of rare vintages shipped back to us.

We also took a drive out to the Point Reyes National Seashore and walked to the Lighthouse, saw several herds of Elk and some exotics brought there from around the world...http://www.nps.gov/pore/

The trip was way too quick and we haven't done that area in about 5 years, but my uncle has invited us to spend some time there next year...who knows.

Great weather and beautiful scenery and wonderful food.

Ric

I love Sausilito for a day trip. And while I have not done much in Sonoma, I have been to Napa a handful of times. Stag's Leap produces some very nice stuff. I can imagine that sipping your way through their tasting area was not awful!

IV, which do you prefer, Stags Leap Winery or Stags Leap Wine Cellars?

Excellent point. Stag's Leap Winery is a nice property that is run by Beringer(?) I believe. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was the property that shocked the world back in the seventies with a Cab that beat out French wines. Cellars offers high end wines that can be very pricey and sometimes are considered among the best of the world.

"Winery" is more in line with other good Napa properties, producing quite good wines at not unreasonable prices.

Agreed. I have a few 97 FAY's and SLV's that I am sitting on but do enjoy the winery's wine for drinking today. I have yet to get there having been to Napa only once but did enjoy the tastings very much. La Famiglia di Mondavi was one that I liked a lot, as well as Hess and our favorite, Chateau Montelena. I would have loved to gone to Mount Veeder but they were by appointment only. If you like Mount Veeder but not the price I would suggest Hess. The grapes are picke from the same hill as Veeder and Hess makes it very affordable. There is a Hess Collection and Hess Select. Select is the lesser expensive of the two. I believe they have bottled under Hess Estate which I believ is not as pricey either.

Having sipped through several houses in Napa, I always liked the Inglenook (Napa, NOT Navalle, ARGH!) which is now owned by Francis Copolla. His Diamand Series wines continue the tradition of Inglenook.

We also enjoyed Via Sattui, a little boutique winery. And the pilgrimage to Robert Mondavi's is a must. I think the cute little villages in that area are very attractive, small streets with sidewalk bistros, etc.

It has been a while, at least a dozen years, since I have been there and I probably need to schedule another trip pretty soon.
