anyone have any suggestions on great places to eat in charleston sc? we have an annual meeting there every summer; would like something other than the local seafood eateries, although enjoyed Hank's, Hyman's etc. Looking for upscale cuisine, good wine list, same stuff i love about st. bart.

I'd be interested too, since my husband and I will do a weekend visit one of these days...we're just up the road in Raleigh NC.

Welcome to my 'Big Backyard'. You will want to try the following and please make reservations: 1~Peninsula Grill for beef, fowl and seafood (best foie gras anywhere). 2~Cypress for that special night. 3~Il Cortile del Rey for the outdoor charm of Old Italy and the northern Italian cuisine. 4~For appetizers and before dinner drinks, the Market Pavilion Rooftop beside the pool & overlooking the Harbor and the Historic City. 5~For after dinner, McCrady's for Creme Brulee (this was the watering hole/restaurant of choice by George Washington on his visits to Charleston. 6~Blossom Cafe in the garden is one of the best lunches/dinners-Mediterranean influenced. 7~For the Bar Scene, try Rue de Jean or the Boathouse Restaurant. 8~For upscale seafood, I'd suggest Hanks. --All of these are downtown Charleston & very good. Each of these has their own very special wine list. Have fun. Don't hesitate to ask if questions arise. There are many other fabulous restaurants on the Islands nearby. Ric

rick, a thousand thank-yous for the information. we'll actually be staying at wild dunes resort. i am thrilled w/your recommendations; in fact i had a late lunch at blossom's last trip (alone, while he was in a meeting) and was impressed w/the great list of half-bottles of wine. as well as the food, of course!

desipte over a decade of logging visits to st. bart, i am a relatively new convert to foie gras. (long story, just wondered if there shouldn't be one expensive bad habit i didn't have in my reportoire) have you indulged in the foie gras triology at le orchidee at christopher? folks more dedicated to the pursuit of the perfect foie gras than me have waxed pretty eloquent about this presentation; something about a sharp lemon (perhaps lemongrass??) sauce and the fact that at least one of the three is grilled? actually one of these experts may join us on the july trip, so will definitely put pennisula at the top of the list for her review.

again, many thanks for the assist. my own backyard is not on the gourmet's path (johnson city, tn) but have some expertise in the dallas, new orleans, and san francisco/napa/sonoma county areas if i can return the favort.

Small world-my wife's college roomate was from Shady Valley. And when you are at Wild Dunes, check in with me at 843.343.7355. One of my offices is on the Isle of Palms, in fact I'm there now...and I know where all of the skeletons are. Foie Gras at Christopher-haven't tried it, but the cheeseburgers by the pool are great. Also, a couple of suggestions on the Islands: Boathouse on Isle of Palms and Atlanticville on Sullivans Island...after dinner back at the Clubhouse in Wild Dunes for the tunes of Ronnie Johnson, the local version of Le TÌ with table dancing late. Don't forget 82 Queen - 82 Queen I love that restaraunt and its easy to find/remember because its on 82 Queen street. Try to get a table in the courtyard if it isn't too hot. I also think the Rooftop bar on top of the Vendue Inn is the best rooftop bar I've ever been to and it has incredible views of the city.

On a side note: I proposed to my fiance in Charleston and am heading there next weekend to marry her. Can't wait. Unfortunately, I have to return to Colorado for two weeks while she finishes the school year (teaching). I'm not too disappointed though because after that we're heading to SBH!

thanks for the addition; did the rooftop bar in june 01. thought i would die. decided if it was going to be as hot as st. bart, i might as well be in st. bart. less clothing required.

i hear a charleston wedding beats almost any party anywhere; i hope yours is great fun and that your honeymoon to st. bart is fabulous, too. it sounds like we will be there at the same time, but of course, we'll just take out chances on disturbing newlywed bliss. have you booked massages for you and your bride yet? if there's no one in particular you favor, i'd recommend nadia. she'll come to the villa; does marvelous aromatherapy, does outdoor massages. it's pretty romantic to get relaxed and yummy smelling together, then stare at the ocean, sky, etc.

happy nuptials! long happy life,

terri

My favorite Charleston places: new [Re: TMinatra]
      #4768 - 05/16/03 10:50 AM

In no particular order:

1. Charleston Grill in The Charleston Place. Upscale, beautiful restaurant with Old South Meets Big City ambiance. Very good.

2. Anson. Their seafood is to die for. Very, very good example of Nouvelle Low Country cooking.

3. Atlanticville (Sullivans Island) - go for Thai Tuesday. While the entres are good, we like to order several appetizers and share

4. High Thyme (Sullivans Island) - New. Just took over where Gibsons was. Very, very good. Small, cozy, intimate, with outstanding food.

Oh, BTW, these latter two (on Sullivans Island) are both upscale dining at maybe half the price as downtown. As such, they are REAL BARGAINS as far as quality of food for the money. And, while the food and ambiance are first rate, you can wear sandals and nice shorts and a shirt for dinner. Anytime you can get great food for a great price in sandals and shorts, I'm game

5. Sea Biscuit (Isle Of Palms) - open only for breakfast. Nothing fancy. Almost qualifies as Hole In The Wall but the food is very good. Once you have eaten there, you can claim Honorary Almost Local status.

thank you island visitor; i just this moment thought to check this area for additional posts, as our trip to charleston is about a month away. you posted this while i was in st. bart. (sigh, and now i am not. sigh again.) we are actually staying at wild dunes; our last trip we were in charleston, so some exploring is in order.

the two places on sullivans'island will interest the MR. enormously as he is a shorts kind of guy--one of the best things about st. bart in his opinion is wearing "dress" shorts and flips to a spectacular dinner. we'll have 5 nights, so i appreciate all the recommendations. i presume it makes sense to reserve a week or two in advance for anson, particularly if we were targeting for a saturday night?

we'll probably skip charleston grill; my mom and i ate there on a trip a few years ago and while it was marvelous, and elegant, and oh, that wine list!!!! i think the MR. would need real pants and a shirt, perhaps more. (GASP)

again, my thanks for your opinions and my apologies for a somewhat tardy response.
