Different tastes for different people. I believe that reggae appears from time to time in various musical venues in St Barths. However, the island has no reggae roots whatsoever, and the current styles are usually what is heard. For myself, I have been to various islands and appreciate what each has to offer. On St Barths, I appreciate the calmness, the restaurants, the lack of high rises, casinos, and to some extent, clubs. Yes, there certainly could be more club/music/dance venues. However, the lack of the archtypical reggae style doesn't bother me at all, in fact, I enjoy the freedom from typical music of the islands. Some places need to be different, whether it is freedom from franchises or caribbean style music. I go to St Barths for the uniqueness of the island. If I need more "carib", there are hundreds of other islands. St Barths is French and to an increasing extent, American. Over the intensity of the holidays, there is MASSIVE dancing, music, partying, bar hopping, noise, etc., etc. Then the magnificent, passionate yet refined magicality sets in, and the high season begins in earnest. Somehow reggae does not seem to fit the island, nor does the island miss reggae. St Barths history, aprÈs the Carib indians, consists of French Adventurers and a short period of Swedish ownership. There were never plantations due to the lack of water. Therefore no African population was forced to work on the island, as most other islands in the Caribbean. I like that, and I like the evolution of ST BArths without that.

I agree with Lauren, with the amendment that "different tastes for different islands" applies. I can go to Jamaica for reggae and the Bahamas for calypso and have several times, I can go to Puerto Rico for salsa or I can go to St. Barths as a french island where the music in the small number of clubs reflects a pure "french in the caribbean attitude" that offers a contrast to other islands in the Caribbean. Bob Marley and his music will always hold a special place in my heart, but I attach it so much to Jamaica and that island culture that to wish it on St. Barths is like wishing McDonalds on the world.

Since it dosn't happen very often, I am happy to say that I agree entirely with Lauren. Despite our political and cultural differences we apparently enjoy visiting SB for the same reasons.

I believe that Key West Cafe in Gustavia possibly may sometimes offer reggae. Regardless, I totally agree with Lauren. There are many islands that have Caribbean style music. But that's why St. Barth is special because it has kept it's European/French heritage and with all it's might tried very hard not to go down the path that many other islands have and become the stereotypical Caribbean island.

In my experience I hear more zouk music that anything else. Log on to www.zoukstation.com, select zouk albums or zouk love mix. Or try www.zoukarchives.com. Let me know what you think.

lauren, how do you equate reggae music and high rises...you totally missed the point...i love sbh for all the same resons everyone else does, but whats wrongwith a little music? have you ever been to select? bou bous? feeling? ti st barth? they all play taped reggae music,so why not get a band in from time to time? im not asking for fast food rest,or high rises, just some live music to listen to...im all for zouk too....get some zouk bands....i had a house on anguilla for years, but left because of the crime problem....but now,i just vacation on sbh exclusively..i guess i miss that part of axa the most...reggae every night....if you want it.

Wow..what an interesting subject. Why would anyone object to music? Should the island be so egocentric that it only plays the music of it's Swedish forbearers? They have reggae fesivals in NY and San Francisco. The cadence of calypso and reggae go with the feeling of the Caribbean and, last time I checked, St. Barth hadn't moved. I'm sorry if the music that is the result of an unpleasant part of history in the Caribbean is offensive to some. I was born in the Bahamas and calypso brought great joy to those of us who listened to it and loved it. The one thing I often wish St. Barth had more of is real music.
Oh yes, and anon..what about the crime on AXA? We'd planned on heading there first!

Peter NJ - Ah, how I love a good healthy discussion. But wait...Watson, do I detect a violation of Robert's Rules of Order?
I will object one last time on all these boards, to those that love to misquote, then build a political or philosophical treatise on their own manufactured misquote. Whoops, not subtle enough to warrant another response. Got to be fair and interesting. I did not say that any music was wrong, just what my preferences were. O-P-I-N-I-O-N Some of you guys love the challenge of politics and philosophy even on a carib board. Hmmmmmm......are you interested in other opinions, or just jousting regarding your own preferences? Toward the end of Phil's Phorum, there were message board mischief gremlins. Hey, you know, I come here to enjoy discussing St Barths. If this board is going to put a lot of energy into debating politics and philosophy and race, and all things other than St Barths, it ain't gonna be fun, just a drain. Make your point without the attack folks. Otherwise it will drive away very creative people that just may not fit into the politically correct mainstream you desire to hear. I will be one of them.

Barbara - The words "object...egocentric...offensive". Stay with the program, and again, as I said above, don't start with the political agenda that you may desire. I am on this board for happiness, not to debate the philosophy of the world. N'est-ce pas? If this board quickly (as it is doing already) goes toward attacks on people simply stating their opinions, it will lose a lot of otherwise great people from the board. I don't feel like being put on the defensive by anyone. I make my comments, I do not insult, attack, make fun of anyone, make up negative quotes or demean anyone in my comments. I have in the past on the old boards responded to hooligans and mischief makers. No time for that these days.

Wow!! I can't beleive I have been missing all of this.Geez you guys don't waste any time getting back to the battle ground do you. There happens to be lots of Reggae in SBH the problem is that most of you visit for such a short time you miss it.All winter long the Christopher has it at least once a month and there are always bands in Gustavia playing now and then.On average once a week during the winter.I think lack of advertising is to blame for most people missing the various music venues on SBH.
Nick
