Hi everyone hope your summers are going well, me and the family were able to wrangle 1 more week of vacation the end of august, i couldn't convince everyone to go to barts for another week this year having been there twice this year and going again in nov. so the family has voted and we are going back to italy our 6th trip (we find places we like we tend to stick with them) we will fly into venice for 2 nights then back out of rome 10 days total, basically after venice no real plan just rent a car and kick it! would like to do some diving if any one knows of any good areas let me know, love all your nonsense keep it up erik

When you were in Northern Italy, did you go to the lake areas? As MikeR said, Como is a must...particularly in summer. Portofino is a charming seaside village you may like. Enjoy!Carol

We spent the month of May in Sicily. I'm still working on the trip report. It's so hard to do it justice. Last year we spent three weeks and visited Parma, Tuscany, Assisi, the Cinqueterre and Lake Como. I echo the votes for Lake Como and would highly suggest the lovely little hotel, La Pergola, in Pescallo. Pescallo is actually the quiet side of Bellagio (the other side of the peninsula), mere steps from the heart of the busy Bellagio streets, but quiet and restful at night and right on the water (look it up on the Internet). Florence is a must, but a good place to stay is La Doccia, in Valambrosa, just outside of Pontassieve. You can hop the train and be in Florence in 12 minutes, and come back to watch the sun set over the Tuscan hills and the twinkling, distant lights of Florence after dark. Edward and Sonia, your gracious hosts will take very good care of you. La Doccia is centrally located, and just a short drive to any of the "must see" hill towns of Tuscany and the Chianti region. Take a look at their web site and ask for the Palles room.
Sorry to differ with Mike. I think he is way too hard on Venice - or just went with the wrong person. We found Venice to be quite romantic and magical. Of course, we did go in the spring and not the heart of the summer. Getting lost in the maze of narrow streets, listening to the music of the night in the Piazza San Marco, or wandering the colorful streets of Burano . . . . a midnight canal ride through quiet side waters and then emerging onto the Grand Canal - great memories.
Enjoy! Italy is good for the mind, body, and soul.

Try heading north to lake major. Laggo Magore? There is a beautiful little town called Ronco where my wifes family is from and has cousins still there. You can charter a boat that will take you straight to the feet of the swiss alps. Quite a view. As for a drive just get on the autostrata, head south and stop at every autogrill for a half bottle of wine, panini and pasta and espresso then back on the road doing a buck twenty.

Re Mike's comment about Venice: Don't forget to wear a nose plug after you disembark at the Grand Canal -- lots of residents in the back waterways still dump their garbage out their windows. Yum ...
