Has anyone chartered a boat and cruised the canals in Burgundy? In a moment of graciousness that may have slipped over the line into temporary insanity, I offered that we could go to Europe for Spring Break next year rather than SBH. Bien sur, la belle France was the only destination seriously considered, and canal cruise in Burgundy is the top contender.
Does anyone have recommendations for a boat chartering company (we're considering a self-guided cruise, not a cruise-ship type cruise), itineraries, must-see towns and sights, restaurants, vineyards, shopping?
Thanks, EricF

I checked these out a few years ago. Although I have never done it, Abercrombie and Kent appears to be the leader in this field. Their boats range from a couple of dozen rooms with a somewhat "budget" price to private small boats with WOW prices. They use converted grape barges perfectly designed for liesurely cruises along these rivers.
If Ed McMahon drops a big check off at your doorstep, I say book these guys because they are probably the oldest in the game, and likely the best.
Bon chance.

A&K is by no means the only or the best. There are numerous companies.
But this poster indicated that their preference is for self guided barging. Here are some resources: Barging in France - http://www.barginginfrance.com/ Burgundy Canal - http://www.burgundy-canal.com/ Crown Blue Line - http://www.crownblueline.com/index.html - highly recommended Locaboat Holidays - http://www.locaboat.com/index_en_2002.php Rive de France - http://www.rivedefrance.com/default_gb.asp
In the event you wish to consider a crewed barge I can recommend you take a look at: Afloat in France - http://www.orient-express.com/web/taif/taif_a2a_home.jsp The Barge Lady - http://www.bargelady.com/ French Waterways - 2 barges - http://frenchwaterways.info/about.html French Country Waterways - http://www.fcwl.com/home.html
