My wife are frequent visitors to St. Barts so needless to say, we like to go on more upscale vacations. We are thinking of taking our kids (5 and 9) to Hilton Head this summer. It has been many years since we have visited and we were wondering how the island is looking these days, in particular, Sea Pines. We were thinking of staying at the South Beach Club in Sea Pines. Has anyone stayed there?

Frank,
Hilton Head has moved more in a direction of retirees, golfers and adults in general as time has passed. All may not agree, but I convention there twice annually and see more and more adult entertainment spots, more golf and more retirees. Not bad, just maybe swaying away from the traditional family vacation you have had there in the past. The Island is beautiful, more dense as HH spreads all the way west past Bluffton and beyond. In the summer (June, July & Aug) family vacationers do outnumber others, but any other time you will see adults primarily, mostly golfers, a few boaters, some for tennis and balance on convention. The other obvious change in last 5-7 years is the emeging OUTLET or Factory Outlet Shopping Centers. Just don't like them.

Agree with Seles. I have stayed at the Hilton Head Westin on several occasions and like it. That hotel also works well for the ages of the kids you have (5 and 9). I know most of us have a bias toward houses or condos with a family but some of the developments at HH are relatively densely packed in. It just seems there is more room on the beach at the Westin and the pool is pretty nice.
In the summer, HH can be a bit crowded. If you go somewhere to eat, give yourself time to find a place to park.
HH is first rate all the way, no doubt. If you like HH and are looking for a family vacation, why not give Isle of Palms a shot? In Wild Dunes you get many/most of the same amenities that you get at HH and outside of Wild Dunes the island itself has that Old School Family Vacation feel - with thoroughly modern houses.
I have done both HH and IOP many times. While I have nothing bad to say about HH (it is quite grand) I think IOP is hard to beat for a family.
And here is a secret, shhhh, dont let anyone know:
Some of the BEST dining in the Charleston area is on Sullivan's Island right next to IOP (High Thyme, Atlanticville - love Thai Tuesday, Station 22) and not only can you go to dinner in shorts and sandals, but the prices are great.
If you need any assistance putting together an IOP trip or purchase, we know people who can help you.

IOP has HH out charmed hands down! And Charleston is a bit more charming than Bluffton! Listen to IV!

Of course, honesty compells me to list my bias here.
I first went to Isle of Palms over forty years ago and my family has gone back dozens of times since then. My mother used to go as a small girl seventy years ago and her great great (I believe) grandfather actually was making a trip there as well - until he got caught by the union soldiers as a spy (he was) and was shipped up to prison in Connecticut (where Connecticut family bought his freedom).
As such, I can TRUTHFULLY claim that my family has been going to the IOP for over 140 years, although, admittedly, some trips have been more enjoyable than others.
