We stayed at Firefly last January, and I agree....we loved it there....IV, after reading your thoughts on SBs and the increase in tourism....you should definately try Mustique. We went to SBs this year in Feb, and were very disapointed in the crowds. We plan to return next year in late April to avoid them. But, we also want to return to Mustique.....there is something magical about the island, and privacy is the MAIN concern and respect given those who go.

Mustique does intrigue me. I have looked into Firefly, Cotton House and several villas. I think Fort Shandy (built on the site of an old coastal fort) looks way cool. Think about the history of the sugar trade, naval battles and pirates: When you are guarding a coastline, where do you put a fort?
Exactly.
You put it somewhere that it can have a fantastic view.
Mustique is not in the immediate future, but depending on whether or not US Scair can stay aloft, I may go there in a couple of years.
Would appreciate any and all reports.

Spent a week there in January. It is definately laid back and quiet. There are certain characteristics that make it distinctly different than SBH: 1. Unless you fly from NYC or MIA, a one-night layover in Barbados is probably required. 2. Restaurants are quite limited. Basil's, Firefly, and Cotton House are about it. 3. The beaches do not match SBH. 4. Evening activities are almost non-existent. We were there for Basil's 10th Annual Jazz Festival, which was fun, but it only happens once each year.
Some of the similarities:
1. Very small island(1x3 miles) 2. Very safe 3. Beautiful villas(We stayed at Rosa de Venti, which we enjoyed) 4. Extremely nice people. (Most come from St. Vincent) 5. Great place to "hide out".
From middle-America, Mustique is just too hard to get to and is almost too quiet. We go to SBH each May, and while the crowds are gone, most restaurants are open and the traffic is just about right. I am glad we went to Mustique and maybe we will return in 5 years. But for an annual retreat, we'll stay with SBH.

I am curious how people who have rented in Mustique have felt about having staff around the house. The villa I was looking at had housekeeper, cook, butler, etc.
