I noticed that St Barths was giving Les Saintes 20,000 Euros in aid after a recent earthquake caused substantial damage. Does anyone have more details on this earthquake as a Google News search comes up empty.

Wayne - Their was an earthquake on Nov. 21, 2004. I think the extent of the damage was in Terre-de-Bas. This is a fairly comprehensive report of the earthquake in the Saintes (last updated Feb. 15th):

Kara, thanks for the link to the damage report. I recognize many of the locations-#11 where the ferry from TdH comes in; #12 is Chez Eugenette on Grande Anse and the beach itself (wow, what a good lunch after a killer hike).
I am making progress on a trip report-at least yesterday I named and upload all of the pics to webshots. If anyone want's to view them they are located at:

Wayne-we were in the islands a few weeks after the actual earthquake. On Terre de Haut there wasn't much damage to note by the time we arrived (there was some damage, just most was on TdB). What we did see were the green army tents in many places that were vacant during the day and occupied at night by folks from Terre de Bas returning from either work or construction of their home. They go over on the a.m. ferry and return mid-late afternoon.
While on a day trip to Terre de Bas we noticed a whole lot of construction going on...bringing down damaged buildings....lot's of people standing around discussing the projects....good bit of machinery. The kid's were taking their classes under a tent set up next to the church. The road coming around Grande Baie towards Petits Anses, near the red block on the map (#10), was in very bad shape from the landslides. Road construction was slow going but going none the less a bit further past the airport. (the white area between Pointe Sud and Pointe du Havre on the map, figure #10 of the report). I have a picture of the 'airport' on webshots.
We very much enjoyed our day on TdB and would have liked to stay longer. There are three marked trails starting from the very middle/high point of the island. We hiked the second, or middle route, down to Grande Anse beach. Also, Grande Baie is a site-the beauty is amazing.
My next step is to actually write a trip report. If you have any questions please let me know.

Thanks for the replies folks. I believe it also mentioned in the St. Barth newspaper that there was another earthquake much more recently - in Jan or early Feb that was smaller.
Erma - would you recommend a trip to Les Saintes?

We experienced after shocks four times in Dec. two on the beach (most intense) and two in buildings. They were still having aftershocks when our friends went in January, but to a lesser extent.
Wayne-you question is one of the main reasons I am having trouble writing a trip report. What exactly to say about the islands - Marie Galante, Terre de Haut, and Terre de Bas is really hard to say. Trips to these islands include a lot more adventure than SBH...but that is the fun for me and I can't even imagine going back to SBH after seeing Marie Galante, a.k.a. my heaven on Earth. I want to see La Desirade next, Martinique, more of Guadeloupe, etc.
I am usually very direct and honest...which might seem a little rough when I describe some things about LSS...hence the delay. Do not make plans to go to LSS thinking it is a 'little Saint Barth' or even Saint Barth of the old days. You will be surprised. I did like the islands, especially TdB, for what they offered-but not as a clone to SBH. If you like hiking then MG and TdB would be perfect, etc.
