Deb Tor- we will be there for 8 days and staying at Le Petit Hotel- I couldn't get my suite at the Beach Club. Tastevin, Mario's, Le Pressoir, Rainbow, Auberge Gourmand, Alabama, Spartaco, Bistro Caraibes all on my list.

Deb and Andynap:
If you would be so kind, please compare and contrast St Barts and French St Martin. Most St Barts people just say "ooh, yuck, ickypoo" when St Martin is mentioned. But it obviously has some redeeming features. Best beaches, best areas, villa versus hotel?
Merci

SBH smaller, more intimate. More villas. Food great. St. Martin beaches are fabulous- Orient Beach is naked heaven at the far end and topless most of the rest. The beach at La Sammanna is pink. There are many other beaches- Grand Case beach is about 1 mile long and has many restaurants for lunch and dinner- the famous Rib Shacks also called Lolos are there as are haute cusine establishments. The high end shopping- Chanel, Polo, etc. is in Marigot, the French capitol. Marigot has its share of excellent restaurants some on the harbor some on the marina. Because of its size and maybe makeup SBH has far less crime than SXM but Grand Case has a very good police presence and because of the influx of people from the rest of the island to eat there is safe. Most of the visitors stay in hotels almost all of which have kitchens to eat in. Unlike SBH, a lot of hotels are on the beach in SXM. There are villas but cater to large groups as a rule.

Miker says that 10,000 is The Magic Hit Number. Well, to reach that lofty goal, we have to throw in a bit of gratuitous nudity. And, given how off track we have gone in this thread, as is par for the course, I shall.
Ten thousand hits, here we come)
We arent gonna make it IV unless either you or I piss someone off even more then we usually do.....and I'm hosting a 6 team Christmas Tournamnet today, and I have a ton of stuff to do in preparation for it...and if I dont get it all done I will surely be fired..so you re gonna have to run wth this one

Andynap voices my thoughts St. Martin, as well. I especially love the evenings in Grand Case. Strolling along the main road, selecting a restaurant, in and out of the small art galleries. I've yet to feel "unsafe" in Grand Case no matter what time at night. St. Martin will always be special to Roger and I. Andynap, this will take you back a bit. We usecd stay in the small apartments above Chez Martine when it was owned by Jacques. After he and his wife returned to France, we now stay at Grand Case Beach Club. And your list of restaurants on your previous post ? Well, now I'm wishing I was staying in Grand Case for a few days in February. Thanks to your post, Roger and I are planning a return visit to St. Martin next year !

There used to be a very nice French Restaurant in Marigot with a nice bar downstairs and the restaurant upstairs. I think the name was Marie's?? Does anyone know if this restaurant is still there? If so, is it still as good as it used to be? I was last there in 1993 on a day trip from Anguilla.

What strange twists and turns these threads take. I have been travelling to SXM precisely as long as I have been travelling to SBH...dating back to '66. In fact, for years, French St. Martin was my Caribbean destination of choice. Over the years we have stayed at La Samanna, L'Habitacion, Green Cay Village and a lovely villa (Soleil??? I think) on Baie Rouge. From time to time we would venture to the Dutch side for a restaurant, casino or to shop but most of our time was spent in Marigot which had more appeal to us. Great shops, restaurants, harborside BBQ joints and generally friendly people. Then something happened which turned me off to the island completely.
One evening my wife and I along with my son and his fiancee went to Grand Case to have dinner at the Lobster Pot, at that time one of our regular haunts (I understand it is in decline now). Parking in GC (see, I really am kinda on topic) was a particular challange that evening but I managed to find a spot just large enough to wedge the Samurai into...but the process took a little time. Too long, apparently, for the local standing in the payload area of the stake body truck just behind me. Poor guys had to wait a minute for me to park. What a shame. This individual proceeded to harangue my son and I with racially tinged comments. What stands out was "...white M-F'er". And that, my friends, was IT for me and St. Maarten/St.Martin. I have better places to spend my hard earned bucks...places where my presence is welcome. It galls me just to spend the buck or two for a Caribe at the airport waiting for the hop to St.Barth...but that would be cutting off my nose, wouldn't it??
Now...to nekkidity ('cause I'd like to see this reach 10000 hits)...On our first trip to Orient, before even going to the beach I noticed a grocery very near Club Orient. I am an amateur chef/cooking hobbiest and always on the search for good sources of ingredients so we stopped in. As I was trolling the aisles in noticed my wife in conversation with a gentleman who was...how can I put this??? STARKERS!!! IN THE MARKET!!! Something you don't always see in my small town or NYC even. I figured out, then, that we actually were on the grounds of the club...and apparently you check your clothes and any inhibitions at the door. I'll do my sunbathing in the altogether but I think a trip to the market requires some kind of cover up. Those freezer cases can play hell with a guy.
