Villas is SXM or Tortola
      #18211 - 06/01/04 03:19 PM

We are planning a trip to St. Barts but are also going to go to SXM or Tortola with another family for 1 week - a total of 9 people. Would anyone have any info on villas that weren't too expensive in either of these locations. Thanks for any help!

Trish,

Based on your two posts for villa information on SBH/SXM/EIS for your two weeks with the other families...I would try to coordinate with Wimco for both rentals if possible. They have the Carimo listings on SXM and three 5 bedroom rentals on Tortola. In addition they have a wonderful selection on SBH.
Not to say I would limit my selections to only Wimco properties BUT if you were able to find the two villas under one umbrella life may be easier in regards to planning and in the event a 'situatiion' came up....

How will you decide between SXM and EIS?

I can't be much help with the villas on SXM since I have only spent a few weeks at (C PER) which is the antithesis of a villa for families/nine people! But I will say that the Terres Basses area is very nice and I have some good maps of the villas if you would like help. Baie Rouge is my favorite followed by Plum.
A trip to St. Martin/St. Barths would be sort of similiar...on the flip side Tortola would be quite different from SBH in many ways.

Here are a few villas on Tortola with five bedrooms: MAT FAW, MAT FRE, RH SUN. Four bedroom gives you several more options if that is possible.

Tortola and Virgin Gorda were my 'first love' in the Caribbean but I have not been back since finding Bequia and St. Barths. I miss Anegada and Virgin Gorda so maybe one day.... There are things about St. Barths that just hold on to you forever.

Let me know if I can help with any other information. Best regards, Erma

Thanks Erma,

We have decided on SXM. Tortola was only if we couldn't get all nine of us down. But we now are booked and can't wait! I know what you mean about Tortola being nice but St. Barths beats it hands down. We spent two months travelling around Puerto Rico and US Virgin Is and Haiti (believe it or not. Actually we lived there for a year 5 years prior to that trip.) A few years later we went to the BVI. Then we discovered St. Barths. We haven't stayed on SXM so decided we'd do that with friends and just go to SBH ourselves.

Are Baie Rouge and Plum villas or areas?

I have never heard of Bequia where is it?

Thanks for your help,

Trish

Baie Rouge is the beach that La Samanna is on and Baie Plum is the beach down a bit. Last time I was there much erosion had occurred on Baie Rouge and it was hard to get to unless you were staying at the hotel but things change fast and it could be fine now. Baie Plum is hard to park and hard to get to.

Andy, a minor correction. Long Baie is the beach La Samanna is located on. Plum in around the bend. Rouge faces Anguilla/Marigot area.

Your observation of Long Baie is correct, sadly.

Very best regards, Erma

Trish,

Bequia is located in the Grenadines and is the next island south of the 'big island' St. Vincent. Let me know if you want further information on this wonderful gem of an island :-)

St. Martin it is!

Do you want Dutch or French side?

Baie Rouge, Baie Plum, Baie Long are all located in Terres Basses or the 'French Lowlands' that is on the border to the Dutch side (looking at a map if you head from Marigot to the airport you will go through this area...unless of course you take the shortcut inland road...!!!)

This is the best area for villa rentals, in my opinion. All areas are staffed with guards at the central gate and the nicer villas also have electric gates. Baie Rouge is the most private area to me as there is no public beach access point on this end of the beach. Since the sand is very thick...and it is a long walk down to the area where Gus' and the other lo-lo is located, privacy is very high. I have never encountered a safety problem on St. Martin.

How many rooms do you need? Age's of the children are only important for safety reasons at certain villas (just like on SBH).

If you go to either WIMCO or directly to Carimo http://www.carimo.com/ you can browse the villa rentals. I have visted several other villas in addition to my stays at La Perla (Beau Rivage is next door; Mirabelle on Simpson Bay Lagoon; Soleil Couchant, etc)

If you think you might want to stay in the TB area I can send you some good maps showing locations of each lot with villa names. I must admit that I have not updated it much recently but it will still help you understand the area.

Great sunset views on Plum; Rouge has constant breeze and nice view to Anguilla

St. Martin will be a great island to 'do with friends.

Talk to you later, Erma

Trish, here is the map with ONLY the Carimo listings
http://www.carimo.com/New%20Pictures/Big%20pict/Map.jpg My map shows other agencies villas but this will give you a good idea of the area.

Be sure to check out Le Chateau des Palmiers on Plum...watched this one being built and it is a monster!

I stand corrected- thanks Erma- one Baie is another Baie when you reach senility.

Trish, sorry I did not reply sooner. We have rented many villas from Carimo and have never been disappointed. I agree with Erma on many of her comments. By renting from Carimo directly, you save 10% if you ask. Our recent favorite is Villa Turquoise. It sits high on a hill just off the main road from the airport to Marigot but you cannot hear road noise because of privacy walls. It has a fantastic kitchen and lovely formal and informal dining areas. The pool is large and warmer than most and the beds very comfortable. The gardens are beautiful and the live in maid very nice. We also like Beaulieu. I am going through their book and will describe others we have staryed in to you if you would like. The view of Baie Rouge is fantastic from Turquoise.. Baie Longue and Plum are very short drives away. We like Baie Longue for swimming because of the recent beach erosion at Plum, however on our last trip new sand seemed to be naturally rebuilding the beach at Plum and it is CO which most of Baie Longue
(occupied mostly by the stuffies from La Samana) is not. The sunsets from either are fantastic. Best Wishes, I will send another post in a few days with other advice if you desire.

Thanks C.C. I haven't been online for a while and read your post only today. We have gone ahead with French Caribbean and booked Villa Alizea. Has anyone out there been to this villa??
