Dairy products in St Barths new
      #146 - 10/10/02 07:27 AM

Previously posted on the Phorum: Although I have looked exhaustively, does anyone know where to buy real cream on St Barths? I can get milk and "creme fraiche" (which doesn't do the trick since it tastes like buttermilk). Even in Metropolitan France I cannot find real cream. Tried when in Normandy (you know, the Charolais cows etc.),still no go. I guess I will have to ask some chef or patissier in France where the wonderful crËme is obtained.

I'm not sure what you mean by "real" cream.

If you mean the white goo that comes out of the cow and rises to the top of the pail, I fear you're out of luck.

If you mean any commercial product that says "creme" on the outside of the box, and contains a white fluid that can be whipped to fluffiness, and tastes great in coffee, most local markets have it, certainly Match.

Sadly, I've never found a source either. And we've tried each time we've been to St.Barth.

Hi Lauren, why not stop by the Pink Bakery in Laurient and ask them where they get it. Surely they must use it all the time. Just a thought
Nick

Nick - I keep telling myself to simply ask the patissiers, like at the Pink Bakery, but have so far not done so, probably because it seems like such an obvious question. But, I truly have looked everywhere I have travelled in France, and have not found the real thing. As I said, even in Normandy, where the cows doth graze, nothing but that crËme fraÓche....next time I will do an in depth analysis, and simply go to the Hideaway and order a White Russian. I just hope that Anna Kournikova isn't there at the time.
