Well,.....we missed a flight last month and ended up in San Juan at 2:30 in the morning with a flight to St. Martin at 8:00am. Didn't feel it was worth arriving at a hotel at around 3:30 leaving the hotel at 6:00am. Ended up sleeping (sort of) in the airport on the floor...had the WHOLE terminal to ourselves...close to our gate though! I would be interested in what you find if we ever get stuck there again at a reasonable hour.

Not that it fits your criteria for a club, but there is a relatively cheap, clean hotel in the airport in San Juan. We have stayed there 4-5 times when we could not get to SBH in one day. It would suffice for most people who arrive late and leave early.

For an overnight close the airport I would say Hampton Inn, typical Hampton Inn. It's almost across the street from the El San Juan for some nightlife in the lobby. As far as dancing, others might know where you can find that info. The other hotel possibility might be Embassy Suites. The beach hotels will charge a bunch and you won't benefit from the ammenities on such a short stay, so why spend the money when you can visit them anyway.

I second the Hampton Inn. It was incredibly quiet for being "at" the airport, nice, comfy room, decorwise nicer than other Hampton Inns. Also you can walk to a clubby place across the street for dinner and the to beach the next morning before your flight.

Suzanne, quiet except if you are sitting by the pool when the planes are taking off and landing. The sound echos off the "U" shaped building and it sounds like the plane is landing in the pool. God it was loud. I didn't hear it in the rooms though, just at the pool.

I often overnight in San Juan on my way to SBH, usually just to break up the trip rather than from need. When I do so, I rarely leave the hotel, and I'm just looking for a decent meal, maybe a decent bar, and perhaps a casino. I'm still looking for the right hotel, but I've tried three - the Hilton, the Marriott, and the Ritz Carlton. All are adequate, but all are also lacking in some way or another.
The Hilton no longer has a casino, but at least you can get service in the bar now. Previously, even with two bartenders, two bar-backs, and only a few customers, the service was horrible. The rooms are fine. There is a steakhouse (Morton's?) on the property. At least with my Hilton gold card they upgrade me. The concierge lounge isn't bad either.
I gave up on the Marriott when it became apparent that the food and beverage operations were more interested in the locals visiting the casino than they were in the hotel guests.
The Ritz Carlton is very close to the airport, and I thought that it would provide a great haven. I was wrong. It turns out to be what I call a small-r ritz carlton, not a Ritz Carlton. The rooms are adequate, the casino is adequate (at least the roulette wheel likes me), but the food and beverage operation is lacking. They offer a very nice buffet dinner in the main restaurant, but a buffet is not what I expect in a Ritz. They have a high-end restaurant, but it has always been booked for a private function when I have been there. The concierges I describe as the "I Can't" chorus. Their response to almost every request for a dinner or spa reservation has been "I can't help you with that, you'll have to try yourself" Not what I expect from Ritz Carlton.
As much as I gripe, I think that the Ritz Carlton may be my preferred hotel of the three. Proximity to the airport is definitely a plus.
Perhaps next time around I will give the El San Juan a try.

Thanks all for your input...Hampton looks like a fine option..also wondering if Steve knows the name of the hotel in the airport...can't seem to find it online..we get in at 8:45pm and fly out around noon so we won't be spending much time. Not really sure we'll be in the mood for dancing after a full day of travel but remaining optimistic..I'm sure a few wind down cocktails will be in order at the very least. Thanks again, Carl
