and as I have said before..God Bless the sea captains and heli pilots who have the daunting task of evacuating the rigs and getting the men and women safely to terra firma....been there...done that...it will certainly test ones skills and resolve....not fun at all

Balinese Room, Galveston Landmark, Destroyed Flagship Hotel Receives Major Damage
POSTED: 11:11 am CDT September 13, 2008 UPDATED: 11:51 am CDT September 13, 2008
GALVESTON, Texas -- A legendary Galveston nightclub and former dance hall that jetted out above the Gulf of Mexico was destroyed by the massive storm surge of Hurricane Ike, KPRC Local 2 reported Saturday.
The Balinese Room, located at 2108 Seawall Blvd., was ripped apart when Ike came ashore.
The decades-old Balinese Room was a famous, recognizable landmark that extended 600 feet from Seawall Boulevard at 21st Street into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Balinese Room, once a dance hall and legal gambling facility, featured legendary entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and many stars from the '40s and '50s.
The structure had previously survived two other devastating storms -- Hurricane Carla in 1961 and Hurricane Alicia in 1983.
Neighboring structures, including a souvenir shop and Hooter's, were also destroyed.
The Flagship Hotel sustained major damage. The ramp to the hotel was destroyed and a corner of a hotel wall was ripped off.

I just figured the Flagship/Balinese to be a goner.....with the way it sticked out and all........Brennans was a surprise......nice place, although I preferred the one in New Orleans..as bad as it was it could have been a lot worse.....lucky for them it was a direct hit which put most of the surge into Sabine Pass up on into Port Arthur ( home of Janis Joplin and Edger/Johnny Winter)

Still can't reach my parents but I did speak to my little bro. Everyone is fine...a fence down at my parents house and my brother had a huge oak tree fall into his kitchen so it'll be take-out for awhile.

One of my business colleagues in Spokane Washington has a daughter that lives in Houston with her husband and two kids. They evacuated to Austin and were planning in flying home later this week BUT she left her wallet at home and without ID she can't fly. She mentioned one of the principal highways between austin and houston is still under water so they have to wait until the water recedes.
