Two very true statements Mike....For whatever it's worth and this is gonna kill IV not to respond to....As always I will sit at work..dispatch my flights to the Caribbean all season and let what happens happen...

I live in a Hurricane targeted area...Charleston, SC

And these self fulfilling Hurricane Predictions are just that...

While perhaps based on something, my experience has been to act/react with good data later...

I am just genuinely disappointed in that the Forecasters and Experts have given the glamorization to Meterologists and Weather Forecasters in these areas in an unobvious way to specifically encourage heightened anticipation of activity, but not danger.

EX: put on a raincoat, talk loud while trying to sway in 30-40 mph winds during nighttime and talk about conditions that are 'supposed to be'...glamorization and over dramatization that is not intended, BUT can scare the hell out of some people.

This is all about TV ratings/viewing audiences and NOT danger. Shame on them for scaring the public!

Ric, I agree with you, this is all about ratings, etc. Predicting hurricanes is impossible and to scare the general public, especially into NOT going into the Caribbean or Southern US, is not a good thing.

John,

I have seen people move here & install their Hurricane Shutters, which is time consuming & hard work, because the Glamour Guys say "it's coming here", the these nice newcomers wait 2-4 days and uninstall them...takes about 4-6 times of looking pretty stupid before they get sensible. Mine are push button, electronic and take a total of roughly 30 minutes to prepare. AND I tune out tv/radio and plot the course of these things by radar...although some are Hugo Huge, most Hurricanes are actually quite small say in diameter, with only the serious affects (wind/water surge) on the noon to three oclock quadrent (counter clockwise spin), so when Hugo had the eye hit Charleston Harbour, 1-10 nautical miles north (McClellanville)was hard hit with 140+mph winds & 18-20 foot tidal surge, but 1-10 miles south of Charleston (Kiawah) had some limbs down and light rain, amidst 60-70mph gusts & a very low tide.

Also, when Lenny hit SBH many years ago at a Cat 5, it hit from the west (shell beach-that's where the shells went while the goats disappeared at Columbier) and we sought eastern/behind mountain shelter at the villa & while very scared, were very safe indeed...but hungry after it sat there for like 42 hours.

I don't play games with them and respect them, but I hate glamorization and dramatization that video & sound have brought us. It doesn't help matters...actually hurts I think.

A minor understanding, some radar or access and a little common sense can save your life in a Hurricane, but TV has never done anything to help in my opinion...even get people out of FL in time or New Orleans for crying out loud. K was huge too, and NO should have been evacuated 2 days earlier in its low lying state...if I knew that, why didn't everyone else?

Sorry for all this, its a sad point with me...with Lenny, 2 guys lost their life trying to outrun it in a sailboat after I and many others pleaded with them not to leave Gustavia...they had watched all the panic on a TV in Gustavia that occured the day before in Puerto Rico.

My sister lives in a beach town in Fl, and has a theory that a reporter for the Weather Channel is the kiss of death...if he shows up on your beach during a storm doing a stand up, head for the hills...guys's name is Jim Cantore...

as good a predictor as any...
(She was not happy to see the live broadcast 2 blocks from her house last year...

One year I watched a WC commentator lying his a** off in a mild storm on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I was watching him both on my hotel television and live outside the hotel. "Waves crashing over the dunes," was one of his favorite lines as the surf gently washed against the shore. I've had a real thing against the WC since that time. For them it's all about the ratings, and the worse they can make it sound, the higher the ratings - capitalism at its best.
