Andy,
Ouch! A striking contrast. Although the Captainerie could possibly be viewed as a moneymaker by facilitating the attraction of harbor fees from mega yachts . . . don't know how much that adds up to. And a quick pitch for one of the advantages of our type of healthcare system -- if someone thought they could generate a profit with the CT scanner, they would provide the capital.

Look, I am always happy to aid a just cause. But, this strikes me similarly as our local Pharmacy, complaining about the poor/low payments by Medicare/Medicaid and the various HMO's. They instituted a "voluntary" usd 3.00 per prescription service charge, to which I said each time "NO". No one is subsidizing my business when times are tough, and they've been tough as evidenced by the fact that I've not been to SBH with my family since November 2003. Meantime that Pharmacy owner is driving a 2008 Mercedes while I continue to drive my 9 year old GMC Suburban.
So, no, I won't be contributing anytime soon to their new CT machine because they can well afford it, and it's in the best interest of the residents to spend the money if they feel there is a need. If they who live there year round won't contribute the money, why should I?
I hate to sound cynical but the residents of SBH can continue to travel to St. Maarten or Guadeloupe if they don't want to spring for the new medical technology or they can contribute to get it done. I won't contribute a single euro, I have more worthy causes close to home and more needy to fund.

I feel the need to respond to stbartslover's response for the need of the ct scanner for the hospital here in st.barths. As you know many of us contribute to charities back in the states. I contribute to the the american cancer society as my daughter was lost to this disease many years ago. However, this column is called sbhonline for a reason and not annarboronline or anything else because it mainly pertains to what is happening in st.barths. the bottom line, if you want to contribute something, then do, if not, then don't, but please don't discourage other people from contributing to this worthy cause. You never know, you may need it someday.

Wow...pretty narrow focus. Discussion is good and I would guess that everyone on this site can gather the info, contemplate, and make up their own mind. I think I'll let this flow for awhile and wait for the DC meeting.

Didier.
Sorry for your tragic loss.
My Mother volunteered for many years at the American Cancer Society, do know your support is appreciated.
As I posted, I am certain this a worthy cause for residents of St. Barth.
I did require emergency treatment at your hospital and found the staff to be exemplary.
You are correct, not the right place to point out failure of our US system in caring for our own citizens without insurance, who rely on donations as well (if they are fortunate) to obtain even primary care at a free clinic.
As others have mentioned, it is proper that questions can be discussed/answered here in open forum.

I met with our leading Architect, Francois Pecard, today at our Rotary Luncheon. I asked him how much The Captainerie cost. He told me the building itself cost less than a million euros. Of course, as I have already posted there is no lounge for sailors. It is administrative for the port and a conference center on the top floor. He laughed at the idea of the lounge. He said" that there are plenty of places for the sailors like Le Select,Bar D'Oubli, etc. Sorry!! Wrong again

Toothman--
600,000 for the CT Scan...less than 1M for The Captainerie; I don't think you are helping your cause. I recommend everyone go to neutral corners and take a break. Oops, I was suppose to be off line.

At one time, where I live, building a new hospital required what was called a Certificate of Need. The theory was, unlike what we see today in the commercialized healthcare industry, that there should be a demonstrated need before spending money on a healthcare facility. If one applied that concept to a CT scanner on SBH, does anyone know what the actual need is? Have there been any studies done to project how much such a piece of equipment would be used? How does a 1:8500 scanner to population ratio compare to what is standard in medical centers in the U.S.?

I believe to compare the cost of a ct scanner with the cost of the building at the port is sort of like comparing apples to oranges.
Building at the port cost, less than a million euros, will last for approximately a hundred years or so, good value I suppose.
ct scanner cost, 600,000 euros, not sure how long it would last, but if it improves just one life....................priceless
