Jeff,

I'm a little confused by your post. Are you suggesting that the C.T. Scanner isn't needed on St. Barth or just that we on this site shouldn't help pay for it?

Sorry, Tim.
No I don't mean either.
I am certain this is a worthy cause, run by fine people.
The new X-Ray Machine, in medical terms an XRAY scanner, since it's digital (whoa---here I go talking medicine---Caroline would kill me) has been delivered from GE, ready to be installed as I understand it. I was told by a board member it was partially funded by a grant from the Fr. govenment, balance from donations.
The one currently in use is an antique, according to my wife.

The CT Scanner (I have no qualification whatsoever to ascertain need) is an additional, more sophisticated (3 dimentional) piece of diagnostic equipment. Patients currently travel to St. Maarten (or France) for scans. I would assume the new unit will be paid for by a combination of grants/donations?
Good question for Dr. Grodberg.

You know, as a diver I know certain diving areas charge a "user fee" to divers, to support a local decompression chamber...usually a couple of bucks, collected by the dive shops...
I'm the last guy to suggest any new taxes to anyone, but it seems to me that nailing each tourist 2e might help upgrade the equipment pretty quickly...of course, this is in addition to the villa tax...LOL

here you go Fred....George Harrison wrote a song for you

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman
Yeah I'm the taxman

Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car I'll tax the street
If you try to sit I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk I'll tax your feet
Taxman

'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

a resort should not ( and usually does not ) tax tourists for items which have nothing to do with the resort/tourist dynamic....its one thing to tax the tourist for road repair because their presence is contributing to the need for that....or beach clean up for the same reason.....but a CT scanner is something the people of St Barts would mostly if not solely benefit from and therefore they should decide if they want it, and if so, to what degree they can afford to subsidize it.....than after whatever the amount is collected from the general population....if it falls short, than contributions from outside people would be appropriate.....I am willing to contribute to the cause but first I would like to hear how much the citizens, businesses and government are all coughing up for it...because if the majority of the people dont want to buy it and dont think its important.....well than it seems rather dumb to force feed them a CT Scannner

Tim, I can understand how part-time residents like yourself have a vested interest in improving the healthcare infrastructure in St. Barts, but for the occasional visitor, the notion of donating another $110 to a place where I spent the identical amount last week for four burgers and a cheap bottle of wine is difficult to digest. It's not exactly a poor backwater with no source of funds.

Chip- I wonder how many would contribute if they knew that last year SB finished the 3 million euro "Captainerie" as a lounge for mega-yacht crews.

So, have you changed your vote from "Yes, why not" ?
