big storm.....
      #116843 - 12/17/07 07:49 AM

boy oh boy do we look good going into the holiday week.....a ton of snow on the ground...10-16 inches yesterday on top of what already was a nice base....I haven't seen anything like this in NH since the late 80's.....cold temps too.....this is making for quite an easy adjustment from Colorado to here....however the ugly side of New England is showing itself today......40-50 mph gusts and single digit temps creating dangerous wind chills and making it impossible for the upper lifts to run...no biggie...throw another log on the fire and have another cup of coffee.....the snow aint going anywhere anytime soon

another foot tonight.....hard to believe....this continues to be a season unlike any in recent times....I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a New England ski trip at this point in time and its rare that I ever say that, given the typical up and down patterns which usually come in New England ski country

Mike, You should take credit---tell everyone that it's because you moved back full-time! We don't ski but have plenty of friends who do & they are in ecstacy about conditions in VT, NH & ME. You are a lucky charm. Enjoy.

I don't ski. Please ask Wendi what it would cost me to have you (and the snow) shipped back to Colorado...

Mike- what is the major difference between the snow here and in Colorado? Powder vs. hard packed vs. frozen granular?

one thing Andy...water content....snow in New England is heavy water saturated snow....which makes it easy to turn to ice or a gloppy mashed potato type of snow...that doesnt happen in Colorado....snow which falls above 10 thousand feet is falling through air which is very very low in humidity...consequently the snow is very low in water content and fluffy and light....easy to drive on.....wonderful to ski in as the lighter snow is easy on the legs to ski through .....you can literally take a foot of Colorado powder off your car with the whisk of your hand....humidity is the biggest detriment to snow.....nothing melts snow faster then fog....but above 10 thousand feet your humidty levels on any given day are usually below 40%...and lots of days are under 20%....so the snow holds its fluffiness for long periods of time even in warm temps and sunshine....the low humdity levels are also why people dont feel as cold in it...you can't compare a 10 degree day here to a 10 degree day there.....they are completely diffeent in how they feel

Colorado is also getting great snow in large amounts. Friend who lives in Avon emailed me a couple of days ago that they have the "best snow" they have seen out there in 15 years. Stepdaughter got there today and describes it as "awesome." And I have to go to SBH next week! Damn!
