It used to be a snowmaking race between the high altitude areas of Loveland and Keystone. I guess now that A-basin has snowmaking, they have the edge because they have even higher terrain and colder temperatures. Not sure winning the first-to-open race is a good thing.

I just checked their site and see that they will be putting in a new lift and opening up a huge new bowl on the other side of high lift. That's delicious-looking terrain but you used to have to hike back to sample it. Not sure doubling the size of the ski area is a good thing either but, if I find myself in Colorado this season, I'm sure I'll give it a try. I guess the old A-basin is moving toward the mainstream. Are condos next?

Josh...I've learned to never say never...but I know the guys and gals who run A Basin pretty well...and they are absolutly ol school ski bums....I dont see them selling out...expanding???...yes..they ve been hankering to open up those back bowls for quite some time....A Basin has been privately owned for most of its life, with the exception, of the dark ages it went through in the early 90's when Ralston Purina owned it.....it will be fine...and it will be a condo, latte, sushi, one piece faux fur jumpsuit, NFL parka free resort for years to come

Good to know. Alta and Mad River Glen are other old-school areas. Maybe Silverton is a new addition to the old school.

I love MRG....you wanna know just how much ol school they are?....they spent more money this fall fixing up the old original single chair they have ( its the only one left in America ) then they would have spent if they had just bought a new one!!!...I plan on spending a day or two there this winter...thats about the only trade off of being "here" as opposed to "there"....
