Has anybody stayed there? Seen some mixed reports. We like South Beach (have stayed at Tides and Raleigh) and it's supposed to have a similar vibe. We're thinking of a 2 or 3 day stopover on the way to SBH.
Incredibly, I was able to come up with a US Air itinerary that was only $20 more to stop over. We're in at 11:30 from Boston, and can be in SBH by noon when we continue the journey a few days later.
Also, toplessness is pretty much non-existent in PR, correct?

I remember seeing the Water Club... but don't know much about it. We have stayed at the Ritz Carlton and at the El San Juan (Wyndham) in San Juan... Ritz is very elegant and quiet with a small casino. The ESJ is a big and happening place with many restaurants to choose from, a big casino, a nightclub, a man making cigars in the huge bar/lobby, etc. It is really more of a resort. They have added some beach suites that are on the beach with their own pool (shared among all the suites) and only accessed with your room key. We enjoyed both hotels... if you want action - the ESJ... or quiet and lavish... the Ritz. Both are easy access to the airport. Also check out "SoFo" in old San Juan - an area of hip restaurants and bars on South Forenza st. (may be misspelling name of street!) The beaches are quite different from SBH... and I have never seen any topless sunbathing. Most restaurants, bars and casinos require slacks to enter in the evenings. If you need other info... PM me. I have also stayed at the Marriot... but that was a spring break trip with kids.

I seem to remember that Cuelebra? island or another island off the coast of P.R. may have topless sunbathing?

jdr,
Okay, you might lose the vibe of the Water Club but as an option....close to San Juan is the Wyndham El Conquistador/Golden Door & also the Las Casistas/Golden Door resort. They have a private island, Palomino, that is 100-acres w/ horseback riding and beaches. I have seen references to topless (and otherwise) options on the beach here. I believe it is the private part of the island that allows the bathing "option". There is a boat that takes you from the resort over to the island and back. Might be an option for your stopover trip. Ah, the Golden Door Spa might also be a good way to start relaxing!
Good luck, Erma
