I love Tortola......I cannot comment on places to stay because I always went there on day trips by boat when I lived in St Croix...but I visited it last spring for a day and it hasnt changed much.....the evil development monster hasnt quite reared its ugly head yet and the people are friendly....Cane Garden Bay is a nice beach.....and day trips to very nearby Virgin Gorda are well worth it.

Fly to Tortola, sail to Virgin Gorda, stay at the Bitter End Yacht Club. Not necessary to sail there, they can arrange a boat for you or not....BVI's are for sailing...

I have stayed at Long Bay and was not happy at all there. It is a bit rundown and the service was bad. The food was bad (terrible by SBH standards )..I could not recommend it. I did not really even like Tortola at all. It's just not my kind of place..no shopping, beaches are just ok...Virgin Gorda is a much better choice to me.

Lauren is right, BVIs are mainly for sailing. We go each year but also go to St Barts each year. Totally different. BVIs are "down and dirty" with beach bars/hangouts and gentle friendly people. (British influence) The scenery is gorgeous and beaches are nice (some of them).
For a land based vacation, you would be better off at Virgin Gorda (Biras Creek, Little Dix Bay, Bitter End Yacht Club) or Peter Island Resort.
The snorkling is better than St Barts. The food is more "island fare". The driving is worse, longer distances, goats everywhere, hills and curves (like coming from Saline to St Jean over the hill).
On a sailboat, however, it is supurb since you get to a different beach/anchorage each day.

Haven't been to Tortola except coming by ferry from Virgin Gorda to meet up with a catamaran for a day sail (Aristocat-nice couple own and operate it). My family took a trip to Virgin Gorda BVI last June. It was incredible! Check out loblollyvilla.com. That's where we stayed. It is a marvelous villa on Mahoe Bay development. There are other villas there as well that would be very nice as well. We had everything you would ever wish to have in a place to stay. The villa is fully equipped, large, and has a great pool. It has a real nice quiet beach for laying out on and going swimming. There is a great reef for hours of entertainment right off the beach. We saw turtles, squid, lots of fish, and other sea life among the coral heads. There is also a tennis court adjacent to the villas.

Its an easy flight from San Juan to VG. Just a few minutes longer than Tortola would be. There are several companies that could work out accommodation arrangements for these villas. We had a pleasant experience with caribbeanway.com. Have fun!

Peter Island is really wonderful, but extremely expensive. That's coming from somebody used to $1000 a night for two. I would not go so far as to recommend against it, but I think there are places as good for less money. Admittedly, a pretty large island all to yourself (or nearly so) is pretty cool though. Wonderful beaches, some totally empty.

Biras Creek is also great and more normally high-priced. My wife didn't like the fairly long walk/bike ride (they give you bikes) to the beach, but I actually thought that was a nice feature.
