Dear Friends: As many of you know, there has been discussion in this site about forming an organization that could raise monies for worthy causes on St. Barth. After much research into the subject, including a lot of on-island footwork by Tim, our plans have become more formal and are as follows: An organization called Friends Of SBH has been formed with the initial board members consisting of Kara, Tim, JEK, KevinS and Island Visitor. The mission of this organization is to collect and distribute monies to worthy causes on St. Barth which will benefit the residents of our beloved island. There will be no handling fees or any other funds taken from the donations and 100% of what is contributed will be sent to the people of St. Barth. After many discussion with different people on the island, it has been determined that there a re particular needs that we can help meet with the St. Barth Fire and Rescue Service. As identified by the Fire Chief, these include the following:
2 Arm Digital Pulse and Blood Pressure Instruments
1 Wrist Digital Pulse and Blood Pressure Instrument
1 Advanced CPR Training Mannequin
2 Resuscitators with Oxygen Supplies
1 Instrument to Measure Patient Oxygen Levels and Other Functions
1 Automatic External Defibrillator Our goal will therefore be to raise at least $7,000 and forward those monies to the Fire Chief who will be able to use these donations to help meet these goals. We have previously received individual pledges ranging from $200 up to $1000, but any amount will be gratefully accepted. Participation in these donations is entirely voluntary and in no way is a requirement to continue as a member in this website. As such, no one should feel compelled to make any donation if they do not choose to do so. For some, the idea of sending additional money to a vacation site may not make sense. For others of us, it is a way to give back to the people of St. Barth, many of whom have become our personal friends. Even with great beaches, wonderful restaurants, fantastic villas and hotels, the greatest attraction for many of us is ultimately the people of the island who make the place so magical in the first place. And it is in appreciation of these friends that this organization is being formed. For those who would like to donate, please send a private message to one of the board members listed above detailing your pledge. You will receive a confirmation and the address of our Board Member JEK, as well as instructions for how to fill out your check. All checks will be made out to the local organization in St. Barth but collected stateside by JEK (saving each contributor on postage) and forwarded together so that a proper and accurate total can be tallied. The amount of your donation will be not be posted or otherwise disclosed. After much research, it was determined that the cost of setting up a tax-favored structure would exceed likely collections and therefore these contributions will not have any tax-favored status. That is, we will not be able to deduct our contributions from our taxes as charitable contributions. So this is truly a gift of love, friendship and appreciation to those people of this most magical island who have captured our hearts and souls. We would like to have all checks by July 1, 2006 if this is possible, although we would certainly accept additional checks after that date. As you contemplate this proposal, remember that uniqueness of St. Barth and how, perhaps more than any other location in the world, we are guests of the people who live there, work there and create the magic. Indeed, this is an opportunity for each of us who choose to do so to help our friends in a tangible way. Thank you for your attention in this. Please feel free to discuss this subject in this thread.

Kara, Tim, JEK, Kevin & IV, Thanks for all your work on bringing this to fruition. The list of equipment is basic & no doubt will save lives. Since it appears that there is already an organized effort on the part of residents to add equipment to the hospital, it is a good idea to help the fire-fighting group.
Maybe this will get IV back to active participation on the forum! Julie

Julie,
I expect IV's skill in writing the above communication from the Board of the Friends of SBH is evident to those who've enjoyed his posts in the past, so he is back at least in a limited way.
Those who wish to make a contribution to the St. Barth Fire and Rescue Service should send a private message to any of the five board members to obtain the mailing address for the checks. Any questions concerning the fund raiser can be directed to the five of us as well.

Food for thought...........
In poking around today I noticed that there are somewhere over 2228 members currently registered that being the highest reistration number I found in the "who's on line" list. At $5.oo per registered member you can raise over $11,000.oo with 100% participation. Since this post is a sort if information / solicitation would it be concidered unseamly to to send out a global PM to all members to provide the above information and see what happens?

Good idea, Fins, but as far as the number of registered members/posters, do you think that a large majority are no longer active on here? I would just venture to bet that many posted briefly for a question/information for a honeymoon or other random trip and are not active now.

And there's a lot of lurking fish out there... maybe some of the members drop off after they have got their advise and made their journey, but others hang out here too.

Karibien and Fins,
We wouldn't want anyone to be put off by the generous amount of some of our previous pledges. The Friends of SBH will be happy to accept contributions in any amount. PM any of our Board Members with your pledge, no matter the amount. The more the merrier! Come join the party!
Speaking of pledges, I would like to announce that we have received several more from donors who wish to remain anonymous. The Friends of SBH are grateful for their support.

The Amicale des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Saint-Barth has a website that may interest people. It can be found at www.pompiersdestbarth.com While much of the site is in French, some portions can be read in English by clicking on the British flag in the upper left corner of the page.

The Friends of SBH gratefully acknowledges the numerous pledges we're received since The Kickoff of the fund raiser. Mr. and Mrs. AndyNap have made a generous pledge along with several anonymous donors. Thank you to all for your support that will enable the St. Barth Fire/Rescue Service to buy this much needed equipment. We're making good progress toward the goal of $7,000, but we still could use additional help. If you would like to give something back to the generous people of St. Barth, now's your chance. Private message any of the five board members with your pledge: Kara Brooks, JEK, KevinS, Island Visitor, or Tim.

Tim,Kevin,Kara, IV ,et al This is a fabulous idea, and we will be e-mailing one of you with our pledge(hard to know who-you are all our friends --probably Kevin, as we will see him soon-2 days and counting !!) Two other very worthwhile causes in SBH which we have been supporting , and, which,I am sure if you were to contact them ,would also be able to direct donations from your fund to good use ,are the Anglican church, and Marius's foundation. They both do wonderful things for our island. After building the fantastic community centre, the Church just this spring completed a very succesful campaign to raise US $200,000 ,and Marius's foundation continues to do great things ,at the school. ,etc, etc Congrats on putting this together Lloyd and Pat

Mes amis, I found the following communication yesterday evening in my mailbox -
Tim:
As you know, I have retired from active posting on the web. After a few weeks of nothing but wine, women (or, make that woman) and song,I have come to some conclusions: Wine is good, women are better and song is overrated. So I have contemplated sobering up on occasion, coming back from retirement and joining the merry band of revellers in SBHOnline. I do, however, have conditions. More specifically, I have a price.
Seven thousand dollars. That's right.
If I come back from my rhumrunning over the next couple of weeks and this charity has received seven thousand dollars or more, then I shall return to active posting. If not, then I shall continue here in my rhum/wine/moonshine stupor that suits me and those around me so well. Dean Wormer may have thought that fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, but I dont recall seeing HIM on Saline (thankfully).
Now, this is a golden opportunity for the many who have very much enjoyed this respite from me and my prosaic stylings these several weeks. All they have to do to continue this IV-Free website is to convince people to NOT give enough money to bring me back. It's that simple.
So there it is. Those who DON'T wont me to return need only convince their fellow posters to not send money to this charity. What could be easier?
Show me Da Money. Until then, sign me Fat, Drunk and Stupid - and STILL retired.
IV
We're within $1,000. of our goal. What say ye, mes amis?

I recall IV's posts, only vaguely because I was on the site so sporadically over past years, but I'd like to have him back to become further aquainted. Count me in for a donation, to be delivered in person to Tim on the 13th if I may.

Ashley,
Thank you to you and others who've pledged anonymously for your support and your pledges to this worthwhile cause.
We're getting closer to helping to modernize the equipment of the St. Barth Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Chief has told me they're now responding to over 300 calls per year, almost one per day. Most of their funding comes from the French government via Guadeloupe, but they never get enough to purchase all the equipment they need. The success of this campaign will make it easier for them to fulfill their role as St. Barth's lifesavers.

That was definitely a good one, but the one I found most amazing was the one he wrote on appropriate dress for women visiting St. Barth, a topic I wouldn't dare touch on this forum.

Ashley,
Wow, finding one particular post out of hundreds from IV on the subject of women's clothing is quite a task, especially since he's the king of the sharks when it comes to changing topics. LOL! I regret that I couldn't put my finger on the exact one I remembered, but you can search under his name on the topic of "clothing" and find more discussion than you ever want on the topic. Here's one that I came across on for whom women dress -
Quote: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would any woman want a man's view- not her husband or boyfriend- of what to wear anywhere or anytime?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because the customer is often right. A woman dresses for one of four people:
1. Her husband. For him, nekkid will be just fine.
2. For herself: In which case, she does not bother to ask anyone else's opinion.
3. Other women: In this case, go to Milan and get a designer to do you up right so you can show the other ladies who the Alpha Tourist Babe is.
4. Other men: Remarkably enough, many women consider it a compliment if other men notice how they look. I have a habit of telling our local lady friends when they look particularly nice. Everyone in town knows I do it as I usually do it in front of my wife and our friends' husbands. They light up like Christmas trees at a compliment. And the husbands are always proud that someone noticed their lovely wives.
Any woman can dress for anyone she chooses. But beware, if you happen to look particularly nice (and a smile goes a LONG way) I may compliment you for it.
Sorry, that's how I am.

That's right folks. We've received pledges that have brought our pledge total up to $6,500. Only $500 more is needed to purchase all the equipment on the list for the St. Barth Fire/Rescue Service (and bring back da man, IV). Remember, no pledge is too small or too large. Private message KevinS, JEK, Island Visitor, Kara Brooks, or Tim with the amount of your pledge and to receive mailing instructions for the check. Thank you again to all those who've shown their support to the Friends of SBH.
P.S. Replying to my own post is something I learned from IV.

Honestly, I already donate to the Red Cross and Médicins sans frontiers, so I wouldn't have a guilty conscience for passing on the contribution to the fire fighters/rescue team on a fairly wealthy/healthy island - but the chance of buying back IV's wit, insight and annoyance to the board, I can not resist ;)
Oh God, I miss IV and would love for him to come back! Unfortunatly, the amount my budget admits me to contribute doesn't bring us home on the fundraising, or by any means reflect my opinion on what he is really worth, so please help me out here...

For MikeR I would pay a Kings ransom to keep around. Maybe it's the ski thing. As for IV coming out of "retirement" I could care less and think it is a cheap shot using this venue to sneak back in the poster lime light.
I've pried my wallet open for the fire/rescue, but surely not to get a poster back on line.

I agree.
So as to seperate this worthwhile cause from my status in the site, let me personally thank everyone who has donated to this charity. The "raffle" was meant to bring a smile - perhaps a little amusement to keep the thread lively.
In any event, those who have donated to this charity have done a wonderful service for the people of St Barth. And you also have my personal gratitude.
Merci,
