My girlfriend and I are getting ready to make our first trip to the island. We are looking at a villa in Toiny. Thoughts/recommendations?

We have stayed out there several times and love the rugged views. I'm not current on villas in the area, so I suggest you call WIMCO and ask for some help. The only downside to the area is that it is relatively remote from Gustavia and shops, marches. Relative in that it is only 20 minutes to Gustavia.

I agree with JEK.In 2000, we stayed in a beautiful villa in Petit cul de Sac, which is very close to Toiny.We were 3 couples.The grocery, bakery and pizza runs got to be a bit of a chore.Plus, the bag ice tends to melt together in the back of the car when it has to sit that long.There are few villas in Toiny,the most famous of them being Villa Nureyev, the only one on the water, which is very dramatic.I know it can be rented because we attended a cocktail party there,but I don't know which agency offers it or the owner's contact information.Maybe someone else on the forum does.

we also stayed over that way for quite a few years....there was a lot to love about it but the ride to and from town to out there was not one of them and it got old....which makes no sense given the fact its only an 8 mile island and considering I have to drive 17 miles just to get groceries where I live at home ....but it is what it is and we eventually ended up back on the other side of the island, which from a logistical point was a better deal for us

I don't think GeorgePa would appreciate the denigration of the Toiny area as that is where his rental villa is.

who is denigrating??...we are simply saying we want to be closer to that action and ammenities..that has little to do with his villa ...and just because three people are saying it was too long a drive for them day to day... doesnt make it a done deal fact for everyone wanting a villa out that way

Welcome to the Forum. As you can see, we have a wide range of opinions, and we don't mind sharing them.
I live in Vitet, and Le Toiny area is only two minutes further around the island from my home. I can still get to Gustavia within 15 minutes.

Let's see- Lorient is 5 minutes away- Oasis market- very nice open 9 to 9 every day- restaurants and gas station there also;
St. Jean - less than 10 minutes away- nice beach, good shopping, many restaurants.

Actually, I was wrong about something.Nureyev villa is on Grand Fond, just past Toiny.There really aren't many villas out there anyway.Some of the ones which are technically in Toiny have a view over a salt pond there.

I stayed at George's villa, last year. The ride to L'Oasis is no longer than the ride from Flamands, Colombier, or Anse de Cayes, to Match.
It really is a small island.

I'm not an old hand, but my recent observation concerning Grand Fond/Toiny was that I admired very much their ruggedness and isolation (amazing that one can say that concerning an 8 sq. mile island, but it's true), and that they provide a bracing change of landscape from the rest of the island, but that the area appears decidedly Atlantic and not particularly Carribbean. I, for one, would prefer to stay elsewhere on the island and spend some time hiking in Grand Fond/Toiny and buying wine from the charming young lady who runs the little wine boutique in Grand Fond.

Thank you all for the feedback! We are looking at a place by the name of Maison Rose. We are using VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owners). I've had great success in the past using this website.
Has anyone heard of this villa?

The url site is not working. Go up top to Search- and in quotes type in "Maison Rose". There are lots of posts.

Let's talk about time.
When I actually looked at a watch, it was 10 minutes from IDF to St. Jean (the airport). When people say 20 minutes from Gustavia to Toiny, is that by the clock? People tend to underestimate travel time.
If we were going from IDF to Le Toiny for dinner, are we really talking about just 30 minutes?

When we stayed at Les Residences of St. Barths Beach Hotel some 5 years ago, which is spitting distance from Le Toiny, it was a good 15-20 minutes to St. Jean and another 5 minutes or so more to Gustavia depending on the time of day and the traffic. So, 30 minutes from IDF to Le Toiny is probably about right - if you know your way probably 25 minutes.

Les Residence is where we stayed as well and L'Oasis didn't exist then so we had to go to Match...and being Select regulars, it just seemed like a long ride back..especially with a few drinks or ten

Agree 110%. We would meet friends for lunch at Le Select or meet them at St. Jean's beach and the "commute" got to be a pain in the "ars". If we had liked the beach on Grand Cul de Sac better, it would have been less of a problem.
We probably had lunch and dinner at Le Rivage more than we would have preferred just to avoid the drive. The commute definitely got old after a while.

If (dream) I lived there full time Toiny would be a great choice - far from the maddening crowd/ rugged/ picturesque...but for a vacation I wouldn't want the hassle of the drive all the time...my 2 cents

For our anniversary dinner, I had pretty much settled on Le Sapotillier but was also considering the place at Le Toiney.
It seems like a much shorter drive from Flammands to LS (being from Chicago, even with great views I really don't want to spend too much time on the road [plus my wife, for reasons that escape me, seems bothered by how close some of the cliffs are to the road]) and in addition, it seems like the food at LS would be better.
Any thoughts?

I can not give an opinion about food at LS vs LT because I've never dined at LT.
But, I can only say that the best dinner I've had in my lifetime was at LS - price was no object and I still compare any dining experience with what I had at LS.
(Just so I don't confuse anyone, LS is Le Sappoletier (sp?).

No way it's 15-20 minutes to St Jean. I spent 3 weeks at Villa Peacock, and the trip to St Jean is about 8 minutes, unless your behind a cement truck, or something. I could get to L'Oasis, in L'Orient in less than 5 minutes.

1- I have no clue where Villa Peacock is.
2- If you've ever stayed at Les Residences of St. Barths Beach Hotel, the drive down the hill to the road takes a few minutes.
3- You were probably driving too fast.
4- With two very small/young sons in the back seat of the sh*itbox that was included with the package, we were careful and slow. And slow not by choice, the sh*itbox had no chance of getting up to speed.

Villa Peacock is right above Les Residence. When I timed it, I timed it from the entrance to Le Toiny.
Yesterday, I got from Anse de Lezards to Grand Fond in about 15 minutes. I don't think I drive too fast, but I do drive more "local" than "tourist". And, if I had 2 kids in the back seat, it'd probably take me an hour. :-} I drove my 2 nephews (6&8) from DC to Alexandria, in April. Don't think I went over 20mph....
