The Cliffs, Greenville

We're looking and thinking about this place for retirement. Any input?

There are actually several Cliffs communities. The original is Cliffs at Glassy Mountain which is approximately 25 minutes north of Greenville. Also nearby is Cliffs Valley. About thirty to forty minutes west are the Cliffs Keowee and Vineyard and they even now have one near Asheville.

It is rare that someone in this (red)neck of the woods puts together a top notch place such as this. Normally, a fellow will go in with too little capital, burn through it, go bankrupt, relax the standards and have junk next door to a five million dollar home. And all of the amenities will fall apart or disappear.

Well, the Cliffs are the OPPOSITE of that. These places started out great and are only getting better. I assume their books are in order because I know that their developments are first rate. Wow. I am partial to Glassy myself however if you like the lake and want to live near several pro athletes (folks from the golfing world and Atlanta have discovered these places bigtime), then Keowee is where you want to be.

The views from Glassy are stunning. Particularly memorable are the signature hole on the golf course, a short par three that slopes down from the tee toward a green protected on either side by large rock outcroppings that continues to slope toward the cliff just behind the green and the entire upstate of South Carolina just beyond. Stunning. I also LOVE the view from the chapel near the top of the mountain. A WONDERFUL place for a wedding. Just beautiful with a capital B.

The folks who run Cliffs have done it right. The clubhouse at Glassy is top drawer, the restaurant is good, the grounds are beautiful and the place has been developed the way you would want it go be developed.

As for those who prefer lake living, Lake Keowee was formed by the Army corp of engineers when they dammed up a river and flooded half the dadgum upstate. It is a very, very pretty lake with hundreds of miles of shoreline that is quickly becoming a favored place of Rich Folks From Atlanta And Beyond. Property values are beginning to take off in this part of the world as it has been discovered. The lake itself really is a beautiful lake.

So your choice is not "yes" or "no". Instead, it is WHICH Cliffs community to choose? If you like mountains and views, no brainer - it's Glassy for you.

If you like lakes and boating and all that, then it's Keowee. Otherwise, Glassy all the way

At Glassy, you can be in Greenville in under half an hour for concerts, dining, etc. At Keowee, you can be at a major university (Clemson) in about fifteen minutes. For a retiree, the medical care in Greenville is first rate - top quality. But it should be noted that there is no nearby hospital to Glassy. For Keowee, you would go to a smaller hospital (Oconee Memorial) that is more modest than Greenville but which still offers many specialties including oncology, surgery, orthopedics, GI docs, etc. In other words, you would NOT be out in the boonies away from quality care.

Temperatures on Glassy in the summer may get into the nineties several days with eighties - and even seventies - being more usual. In the winter, you will get a couple of weeks below freezing with a snow or two. Keowee would be about five to ten degrees warmer.

I am currently sitting less than fifty miles from both of these communities. We enjoyed brilliant sunshine and 75 degrees today. Not too shabby.

So, to answer your question?

YES. In a heartbeat!

Addendum: Just saw The Producers at the Peace Center in Greenville last night. Not my favorite, but that is just me. I have also seen Cats, Evita and Phantom at the Peace Center. So life here in this (rouge)neck of the woods aint all barbeque and tractor-pulls.

Erratum:

I forgot the hospital in Traveler's Rest which would be about fifteen minutes from Glassy.

Sorry.

Well, we're back from our exploratory visit to Greenville and The Cliffs, and the information you folks so kindly provided was excellent and enormously helpful.

The Cliffs -- Glassy, Keowee Falls, Vineyards -- were spectacular in every way, but really not for us. (I think I've got a touch of the gated-community heebie-jeebies here--do I really want a committee telling me what size and color my mailbox may be?) But for many reasons we're pretty well sold on the Carolinas for our relocation. Thus, we are now casting about for the right county/area in SC/NC to be looking in. We want 2+ quiet buildable acres on a swimmable lake, pretty much anywhere in the west/central Carolinas; we have not quite rejected the idea of a gated community entirely, at least not yet. But if not in a gated community, where else should we look?

Any suggestions?

Gretchen

We came, we saw, we bought. 36 months to retirement heaven... Designing a home similar to a St. Barths' Villa - plunge pool and all.

Lake Keowee near Clemson and Seneca is the real up and comer. You saw some of it with your tour of Cliffs Keowee. Some folks also like a development on Lake Thurmand/Russell but that is a little more remote.

In the midlands, there is lake Murray which also has a lot of high end developments. You would be near the state capital, there is a lot to do there and it is a big lake.

Lake Hartwell near Anderson is also very nice. Keowee and Hartwell would be continuous, being interupted by a dam. A place on Hartwell would give you access to Anderson and Clemson. There are multiple nice marinas. A place on Keowee would be above the dam, but very nice.

These would be my thoughts on Lake Property

If you are on Glassy, you can get some cold blowing winds in the winter, but NOTHING like what folks above the Mason Dixon are accustomed to.

One thing to consider, and you would have to review this with the architectural board, is solar heat for the pool. In the Keowee area, pools may open about May to mid-September, although the polar bear crowd may go another month before and after. If you add a solar heater to the pool, you can get close to nine or even ten months of swimming. Gas heat is also an option but very expensive - figure on at least $250 a month or more to heat a regular sized pool in November or March.

What is the job market like in South Carolina for a 55 year old retiree. Looking for part-time work. Retiring from Electric Power Company and want to try something else.

I understand not wanting to be told what kind of mailbox to have, but from my past experience, my neighbor decided to store his boat in his side yard facing our house. Then his lawyer stored two of his sailboats in the same area. Next, he helped out a friend by letting him use his garage for car servicing. The village building inspector had bigger fish to fry, so we ended up moving.

Yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm looking forward to a more restrictive enevironment in a gated community like Woodside Plantation.

You may want to consider Mount Vintage Plantation in North Augusta, South Carolina. No gates yet, larger lots, horse country atmosphere and ver private.

or Cedar Creek in Aiken, SC : http://cedarcreek.net/

The upstate does have a somewhat diverse economy and we are positioning ourselves as a mini-auto capital for the next century. BMW is already here and now SAE is opening. There of course are the thousands of jobs that support these.

There are jobs but it would depend on skills, ambitions, etc...
