If you have missed Lisbeth Salander, you might find this book, translated from the French, intriguing. It leads the reader to a conclusion, then shatters it and moves on. Surprises throughout. Who is a criminal and who is a victim? And a sidebar tale of the lead detective's personal history.

For $1.99? I'm in. Did I buy the right book? Alex: The Commandant Camille Verhoeven Trilogy (The Cmdt Camille Verhoeven Tri) [Kindle Edition] Pierre Lemaitre (Author), Frank Wynne (Translator)

I think so, too, Juliane. One formula the author uses is the shocking beginning of a paragraph that is on a totally different subject than the last paragraph.

This is a great piece of writing (or translating)! Lots of twists and turns and a very surprising, but satisfying, ending.
