USA Today likes Uber, et al

Uber is all over Europe right now, not working but trying to :) The taxi system in Europe is anything from hugely regulated to completely free and when regulated, there's obviously "reasons" why a system like Uber shouldn't exist or how it should work.

Helsinki is among those places, regulated but also works right now. One number to call for a booking (many companies), text booking available as well. All have the same pricing structure, no scams, very safe, and your average ride is a new C- or E-class Merc as the vehicle is such a small part of the expenses. A big problem is that majority of the taxi rides are paid by the companies or the government, the startup fee is too high for short personal rides. When one is drunk, that doesn't matter.

In Stockholm, Sweden, the system is deregulated and you may loose big time. If the window sticker says that the ride from the airport to the city is $1000, then that's what you pay. Better check the prices before you enter the taxi, a bit like in the worst taxi scam countries.

In Sydney I had Uber installed but never used it, it was easier simply to get a taxi on the road in our areas.
