Trip Report:

Thanks first of all to those who answered my question regarding a stay at the Manapany! Returned unwillingly July 9 after 5 nights at St. Bart's. We did stay at the Manapany using Amex points. We were prepared for some decline since last there 15 years ago! overall we were quite pleased. The room was pretty with a spacious sitting/eating area and a beautiful view of the beach. The water was beautiful of course but a little rough for me - for surfers it was great. The staff at the Manapany were both pleasant and helpful, especially the desk manager - can't exactly recall her name. On our first night our car would not start so she and another staff actually helped push it so my husband could jump start it!

We spent a little time at the pool - our main disappointment was that Marion was no longer a bartender there.

In our short stay we traveled to two beaches - Saline and Gouverneur. Saline was nicer in our opinion. 15 years ago Gouverneur was our favorite - pristine, empty, wonderful swimming. I can't believe all the erosion that has ocurred. There is so much loose rock in the surf, I was unable to avoid cuts on my feet an legs.

Regarding eating out, so many wonderful places and surprises. On our second day we were walking through Gustavia and stopped for a beer at Le Bete a Zailes. The owner (born on the island) was lovely to talk to. Right on the dock, nice view of boats, inside atmosphere was attractive and laid back. The music (jazz/reggae) was fantastic. We decided to have lunch - delicious! and came back later in our visit.

Had dinner in Le Cote Jardin and Paradiso's also in Gustavia. Both dinners, desserts and service were excellent. Some memorable details which I would love to re-experience: LeCote's chocolate and whip creme crepe/pancake and the best vanilla rum with caramel. Paradiso's lobster ravioli, sweet potato salad and friendly owners.

Le Rivage was mildly disappointing - food and atmosphere was just ok and it was more pricey than the above. Andy's Hideaway, mentioned many times in this forum, was fun, busy and we were surprised at the diverse menu. Our meal was delicious and the dishes served around us looked tempting as well.

The last experience I'll mention here is our catamaran sail. Upon the Manapany's recommendation we signed up for a 1/2 day sail and snorkeling trip through Marine Service (in Gustavia). Our first catamaran ride ever - It was really worthwhile - the captain and mate were great, as was the snorkeling at Fourchue Island (so everyone else said, I hung out on the boat).

Well, of course we look forward to returning to St. Bart's in the not to distant future. Until then we will experience it vicariously through this forum. The planning is almost as special as the vacation itself. Enjoy every moment!
