Getting Around St. Barths
To really experience St. Barths you will need to rent a car. The Smart car (made by Mercedes-Benz) and the Mini Moke (both shown on the left) are unique St. Barths options and have their fans although they are both being phased out. The Smart because it is so expensive to repair in SBH and the Moke because they are no longer produced.
Most cars on the island are on the small size (the average American vehicle looks very out of place on St. Barths). The most inexpensive ride is the Suzuki Samurai (it is usually the car that is included in the hotel and villa off-season packages). The Samurai is usually a stick shift and lacks both power steering and air conditioning. It does, however, have four wheel drive. For those seeking a slightly smoother ride (with air conditioning) consider the Vitara, Terios or the new line of Suzukis - the Alto, Ignis and Liana - which are making their way to the island.
