Try 'Gulf of America'
By NBC's Domenico Montanaro
First, there were Freedom Fries.
So, of course, it makes sense that someone somewhere would try this – renaming the “Gulf of Mexico,” what else – the “Gulf of America.”
That’s exactly what Mississippi state Rep. D. Stephen Holland, a Democrat, is proposing.
According to a bill he introduced in the Mississippi Legislature, as of July 1, 2012, H.B. 150 is an act to provide that for all official purposes within the state of Mississippi, the body of water located directly South of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the ‘Gulf of America’; and for related purposes.” (Here’s the pdf of the bill.)
The bill is now before the Marine Resources Committee and is expected to get a hearing. It was referred to the committee Tuesday.
Holland’s office could not be reached for comment.

a warning about dog treats...

buyer beware...
(Updates with consultant comment in the fourth paragraph.)

Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- New York's three airports will be among 28 where pre-approved frequent fliers can get through security faster as the U.S. Transportation Security Administration expands expedited screening.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport are also on the list, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters today in Arlington, Virginia. US Airways Group Inc., United Continental Holdings Inc. and Alaska Air Group Inc. will join AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. in participating this year, according to a department statement.

The expansion marks a potential shift in TSA screening processes started after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said Jeffrey Sural, a former assistant agency administator. Besides cutting time and hassles for travelers, it may speed screenings by shortening from normal passenger lines, he said.

"This is the beginning of a wholesale change to the screening experience," said Sural, now a lawyer and public- policy adviser at Alston & Bird LLP in Washington.

PreCheck passengers still go through screening checkpoints. They get a separate line and in most cases the streamlined process.

Participants in TSA's PreCheck program -- who must be invited and agree to provide information such as flight history to the government -- can keep their shoes, belts and light coats on at designated checkpoints, according to the agency. Those fliers can keep laptops and liquids packed in carry-ons.

'Sensible Security'

"Good, thoughtful, sensible security by its very nature facilitates lawful travel and legitimate commerce," Napolitano said. The program expansion "will increase our security capabilities and expedite the screening process for travelers we consider our travel partners," she said.

New Jersey's Newark Liberty International and Dulles in Virginia are two airports Sept. 11 hijackers used to board airliners before attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon. Boston's Logan International Airport, also used by hijackers that day, will get expedited screening.

New York's JFK and Salt Lake City International Airport will have PreCheck in place by the end of February, said Greg Soule, a TSA spokesman. Washington's Reagan National and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport will be added before the end of March, he said.

The program is currently used by eligible Delta and American passengers at seven U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit, Atlanta and Dallas. Participating passengers get a special bar code imprinted on their tickets and are directed to specific screening lines.

Random Checks

More than 336,000 passengers have been screened through the program, according to the TSA. The expansion will be cost- neutral, though it will require the agency to shift resources, Soule said.

PreCheck passengers proceed through the streamlined queues at the TSA's discretion. The agency will always incorporate random and unpredictable measures "to prevent terrorists from gaming the system," according to a TSA fact sheet.

Sparing resources on trusted travelers moves the agency away from a "one-size-fits-all approach" to a more "intelligence-driven, risk-based" system, TSA Administrator John Pistole said today. Pistole has said he would like to provide speedy screening to members of the military and travelers with government security clearances in a PreCheck- style program.

"TSA PreCheck moves us closer to our goal of delivering the most effective and efficient screening by recognizing most passengers do not pose a threat to security," Pistole said.
-New EASA Airworthiness Directive to cover all 68 A380s in service

-Previous directive applied to only 20 planes

-Quantas grounds A380 in separate incident

By David Pearson

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

PARIS (Dow Jones)--European aviation safety authorities on Wednesday issued a notice requiring all airlines operating the Airbus A380 superjumbo to get their aircraft checked for possible cracks in brackets inside the planes' wings.

It is the second directive by the Cologne, Germany-based European Aviation Safety Agency after the agency last month directed operators flying aircraft that have more than 1,300 takeoffs and landings in their logbooks to undergo inspections. That directive applied to 20 A380 aircraft currently in service.

The EASA now plans to extend the requirement to all of the 68 A380s currently in service, irrespective of their age, EASA spokesman Dominique Fouda told Dow Jones Newswires. The A380 entered service in 2007.

Inspections have found cracks in wing brackets in most of the 20 planes examined in recent weeks. Interim repairs have been carried out and several aircraft are back into service. Airbus said it has developed repair kits and these are currently being installed.

Fouda said the revised directive will require A380 operators to check for cracks using non-destructive techniques involving special equipment that detects cracks using high-frequency electrical currents. Up to now, the inspections have been visual.

Airbus is a division of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co NV (EAD.FR). The aircraft maker has previously said that once repairs of the cracks are completed, the plane's operational life will be unaffected. Wednesday, Airbus said "the safe operation of the aircraft is not affected."

The brackets in question, also known as rib-skin attachments or wing rib feet, aren't part of the main load-bearing structure of the aircraft. However, the EAS directive reaffirms that "this condition, if not detected and corrected, may lead to reduction of the structural integrity of the aeroplane."

Earlier Wednesday, Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU) said it has taken one of its Airbus A380 superjumbos out of service to inspect it for possible damage after it had flown through severe air turbulence above India in early January. Qantas said that in the inspection, cracks were discovered in the wings. Australia's flag carrier said Airbus has confirmed to the airline that the cracks don't pose a threat to safety.

"During these inspections minor cracking has been found on some wing rib feet," a Qantas spokeswoman said. This cracking is not related to the turbulence, or specific to Qantas, but is traced back to a manufacturing issue," she said.

Qantas said it expects to have the aircraft back in service within a week.

EASA's Fouda said operators that discover cracks must get them repaired using an interim fix. Airbus is working on a permanent solution for the affected planes that will be introduced after it has been approved by EASA, probably during the summer, he said.
